💖 Shelter Pet + Love = A Happy Tail! 💖

💔It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend Steve Crooks, who lost his brief battle with cancer on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

More than 10 years ago, Steve had a simple but powerful idea: a weekly radio campaign that would help our shelter pets find loving homes.

Steve was a longtime employee of Big Country 102.9, and he helped bring together Big Country, Bishop Automotive Group, and Northern Michigan Animal Rescue Network as sponsors for what became the weekly 'Big Pet Project,' spreading the word about available dogs up for adoption at AuSable Valley Animal Shelter in Grayling, Michigan.

That project continues to air to this day, featuring a new adoptable shelter dog each week. Over the years, the Big Pet Project on Big Country 102.9 has helped countless animals from the shelter find their forever homes.

Steve had a huge heart, a contagious sense of humor, and a genuine passion for helping others—two-legged and four-legged alike. His kindness, dedication, and laughter left a lasting mark on our shelter, and the many animals whose lives were changed because he cared.

He will be deeply missed by all of us Northern Michigan Animal Rescue Network, AuSable Valley Animal Shelter, by the people who knew and loved him, and by the furry friends he worked so hard to help.

Rest easy, Steve. Thank you for everything.

Let's all do more pebbling!

We are in the midst of "kitten season". Shelters and rescues cannot keep up with the phone calls. The suffering will continue for so many newborn kittens as there are not enough homes for them. Please be responsible - spay or neuter your cats!
