What does group training here at SWDT look like?

We don't focus much on cued behavior, instead we are looking at helping people and their dogs: communicate expectations in these situations, learn to read their dogs and other dogs body language more, learn how to respond (and understand what leads up to) emotional arousal and reactivity, and how to regulate around unfamiliar people and dogs.

We discuss and demonstrate threshold, triggers, handling skills, and regulation/focus techniques, so that the dogs and their people are front and center- not the trainer. Our goal here is to provide the information, skills, and practice for dogs and their people to be able to handle these and other situations confidently!

Shout-out to this group of dogs and people for doing an absolutely FANTASTIC job!! 👏👏👏

We had a great time at Christ the King Early Education Center giving several Dog Safety and Bite Prevention Presentations today!

If any groups, organizations, schools, etc. are interested in scheduling one of these, please reach out. One of our greatest missions is to help teach dogs and people how to communicate and preventing dog bites! From triggered to curious...

One of the most frequent questions we get during initial contact and consultations is:

"Is there hope?"

Reactivity has a lot of faces and emotions attached (for everyone involved) which is why every dog and family have different training paths. Learning is rarely linear and never works the same way for two individuals. Every individual expresses and feels emotions differently; we help by taking the time to figure out how and why. Then, provide the dog and their family the tools they need to process and work through the reactivity, communicate effectively, and develop new behaviors.

There is always hope.

Indy started out with us highly fear reactive- barking, lunging, afraid to move out of the space. Extremely passive aggressive when people try to leave.

After a few lessons working through impulse control, emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, and confidence building, we took Indy to a new place and introduced one of our trainer helpers.

She started off with a little bit of uncertainty barking, but as the lesson continued her curiosity grew. We allowed Indy to get closer to him, feel safe in that space and then come out of it. By the end of the session, she was comfortably approaching, sniffing, and moving in and out of his space.

We are so proud of her and her people!! Great job 👏👏
