I have learned a LOT today about all white or mostly white cats. Pet genetics can be so interesting! Did you know, more than half of all white cats are actually deaf in one or both ears?!

The white coat is considered a dominant “masking” of their true color. The white is actually covering their genetic coloring. This also often affects one or both eyes, “masking” them as blue. When the fetus is growing, the eyes and ears are extremely close together, which results in the white affecting the ear closest to the blue eye.

Often, white cats have a small patch of color on the tops of their heads showing their true color. If that cat is to breed with another cat, the kittens are likely to be all or mostly white, with a decent chance of also getting kittens without the dominant white gene and displays the parents underlying true color.
