๐พ THE CAPTURE OF LADY BALDWIN ๐พ
There had been several reports of a gorgeous harlequin Great Dane running around the area of 6th & Baldwin Road. Unfortunately, Hurricane Polo decided to show up and dump enough rain on us to make searching for a giant, scared dog about as easy as finding a needle in a wet haystack. ๐ง๏ธ๐
Bob with All Paws Reunited and Amy with Topeka Lawrence Dog Trappers searched one area for a couple of hours Wednesday with no luck. Except the 100% chance of being soaked by Hurricane Polo.
Thursday after work, Amy went back out and FINALLY got lucky. She found where she had moved to, and thankfully, she had moved AWAY from the highway. ๐
We set up a camera and feeding station, and it wasnโt long before she reappeared and happily inhaled her first bowl of food. We knew she was hungry, but she was also VERY cautious.
And then came the problem: sheโs a Great Dane. ๐
Your average box trap is basically a dog-sized sardine can to a Great Dane, so we decided to try the 6-foot trap. She went about halfway in, decided that was WAY too confining, and promptly retired for the evening.
The next day we brought out the Missy trap.
Lady Baldwin was still not convinced that crossing that little threshold was in her best interest. So Bob spent several HOURS playing the worldโs longest game of cat and mouse, putting chicken where she could reach it, then moving it just a little farther.
She stretched.
We stretched.
She stretched some more.
At this point, the trap had become less of a trap and more of a very elaborate chicken vending machine. ๐๐
Finally, we removed the end panels so she could walk through without feeling trapped. She took her sweet time, but eventually decided the chicken was worth the risk.
She got her dinner and went to bed with a full stomach.
We made plans to come back early this morning, put the end panels back on, and finish the job.
And thatโs exactly what we did.
Lady Baldwin circled.
She sat down in protest.
She watched.
She waited.
And she VERY clearly kept an eye out for the crazy people who kept showing up to put chicken somewhere she could reach. ๐
But eventually, hunger won.
She walked into the trap.
DOOR CLOSED.
๐ LADY BALDWIN IS SAFE! ๐
She is VERY skinny, so she has a lot of recovering to do, but she is finally somewhere safe where she can get regular food, medical care, and some much-needed TLC.
After everything she put us through, she earned her name:
๐ LADY BALDWIN ๐
And apparently, the official motto of this entire operation remains:
Chicken wins. ๐
Huge thanks to Bob with All Paws Reunited for spending hours playing chicken chess with this giant, stubborn girl. Thanks as well to all those that reported sightings and to ACO Schmidtlein of Shawnee County Animal Control for providing her the regal ride to the shelter. ๐โค๏ธ
One more dog off the streets and one more happy ending in the making. ๐พ
