Fifi, a French Bulldog, was struggling with escalating behavioral issues that began after major life changes. In an attempt to regain a sense of control over her environment, she began displaying two behaviors:

•Guarding random household objects (remotes, phones, socks, paper) by standing over them, barking, and not letting anyone get near.

•Body blocking people, even some family members, with barking and nipping when they moved around the house.

During my initial assessment, I noticed Fifi’s teeth were chattering after she exhibited the behavior. This important physiological sign confirmed that her actions stemmed from a deeply emotional, anxious state—not defiance.

To help her feel secure again, we implemented a positive reinforcement plan.

Fifi has made incredible progress. Thanks to her owners' dedication, both behaviors have diminished significantly. By choosing to address her emotional state instead of punishing the symptoms, we achieved lasting, meaningful results.

Great job, Fifi! ✨

Many of the old-school ideas about "alpha" status and "pack leaders" have been debunked by modern behavioral science.

Dominance isn't a personality trait or a quest for power; it's a flexible relationship that changes based on the situation and what is most important to the dog at that moment, such as a favorite toy or a comfortable bed.

When we label a dog as "dominant" for jumping, pulling on leash, or showing aggression, we often misdiagnose the behavior and overlook its true underlying cause. These behaviors are typically the result of high energy, a lack of consistent training, or even underlying anxiety. By shifting our focus from "taking control" to understanding their emotional needs, we can address the root of the problem.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) emphasizes that using force or intimidation is not only counterproductive but can actually be dangerous. Choosing positive, science-based training methods creates a safe environment where your dog can learn and thrive without fear.

When Ivy was first rescued from an Amish farm, she struggled deeply with reactivity. The sights and sounds of the neighborhood were overwhelming; she would bark from the moment she stepped outside until she got back home. Her owners were stressed and felt like they couldn't even leave the house without a scene.

We focused on building trust and shifting her focus. By using the 'look' cue and positive reinforcement, Ivy learned to check in with her owners for guidance rather than fixating on triggers.

Now, Ivy is finally enjoying her walks. She’s learning the world isn't so scary when you have a family you can trust! I am so proud of Ivy and her owners for their dedication to this journey. 🄰

āš ļø Spring is here, but so are lawn chemicals āš ļø

If you see a small yellow sign on a lawn, it’s a signal to keep your dog on the sidewalk.

Why It Matters:

• Paw Safety: Fresh fertilizers and pesticides can irritate sensitive paw pads.

• Ingestion Risk: Dogs often lick their paws after a walk; chemicals can be harmful if swallowed.

• Wait Time: Most treatments require at least 24–48 hours (or a good rain) to dry and become safe.

Pearl (left) was a stray, living on the streets, and spent an estimated 5 days with a broken leg after being hit by a car before she was rescued. After being saved, she bounced through several homes, struggling to find where she truly belonged.

When she finally found her forever family, they reached out to me with concerns about her relationship with their other dog, Nessa (right). To the human eye, their "discussions"—the growling, lip raising, and snapping—looked scary. In reality, they were just two dogs setting boundaries and learning to communicate.

The irony? Nessa is the secret to Pearl’s success! Pearl’s previous homes didn't have another dog, and it turns out that canine companionship was exactly what she needed to feel secure.

The key to a happy home isn't finding the cutest puppy on Instagram—it's finding the dog whose energy, size, and personality match your daily life and routine 🐶✨

Not all dogs do well in an apartment, but Skye has been thriving with his new owners and fits in seamlessly. He’s a calm dog who loves walks, playing with toys, and cuddling up on the couch.

Before you fall in love, ask yourself:
šŸƒā€ā™€ļø Activity Level: Do I want a hiking buddy or a couch potato?
ā° Time: Am I home enough for a high-energy puppy, or is an older dog more my speed?
šŸ’ø Budget: Am I ready for food, grooming, and vet costs?
šŸ” Space: Apartment living vs. big backyard?

Rumsey used to absolutely love her daily walks. That all changed when a loud truck scared her, turning her once-favorite activity into a source of fear and anxiety. She started pulling back, desperate to get home.

This likely happened during a "fear period"—a temporary stage in development where dogs become hypersensitive, turning minor scares into lasting phobias.

But through positive reinforcement—using treats, playtime, and her buddy Ellie—we are helping Rumsey overcome her fear. She is officially back on her way to loving walks again and realizing they are safe and fun!
