What is Compost?

Compost is created by recycling organic materials like food scraps and yard waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Instead of sending these materials to landfills, composting returns valuable nutrients back to the earth and improves soil health. It is a simple way to make a meaningful impact.

This is GREAT worm food : )

At Worm Works, we sell "vermicast" (worm castings) that can be added to your soil mix or top feed to your plants 1/2" - 1" inches.

Buy locally or on our website!

Now available for local pickup at:

Put a Plant on It – Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo

This past weekend was a solid reminder of why we do this.

We hosted a free, hands-on workshop with families learning how to compost at home—simple, practical, and real. At the same time, our Rooted in Buffalo program continues to build, with 10 households now actively composting, learning, and using worm castings each week.

We also spent time with our friends at Buffalo Go Green—right on the East Side—who are using Worm Works castings across their urban farms to grow fresh food for the community.

This is the work. Turning waste into something that gives back.

ISOPODS don’t get talked about enough—but they should.

They’re one of the quiet engines behind healthy soil systems.

What are isopods doing for you?

In compost systems:
They break down tough organic matter—wood, cardboard, leaf litter—the stuff worms take longer to process. That means faster cycling, better aeration, and a more complete end product.

In worm bins:
Think of them as your support crew. They help stabilize moisture, reduce odors, and keep material moving so your worms can stay focused on producing castings.

In terrariums (bioactive setups):
They act as a clean-up crew—eating waste, mold, and decaying matter. That’s how you get a self-sustaining system that stays balanced over time.

As pets:
Low maintenance, surprisingly active, and a great way to learn ecosystems on a small scale. Kids and adults both get pulled into watching them work.

At Worm Works, we’re using isopods as part of a bigger system—not just composting, but building living soil ecosystems. And the coveted Buffalo’s SUPER SOIL! (Sold online and local plant shops!)

If you’ve never seen them in action, come through this Saturday:

Workshop: Saturday 11 AM – 1 PM
We’ll have live demos, bins, worms, isopods, and starter setups available.
