Hi everyone! ♥️
We would love it if you would help us grow our new page by sharing it with your friends, and giving us a follow!
About three years ago, I (Lauren) decided I wanted a Maine C**n kitten. After hearing them described as the Golden Retrievers of the cat world, I was pretty sure I needed one. 😂
What I didn’t anticipate was how difficult it would be to find the right breeder.
I wasn’t simply looking for beautiful cats with impressive pedigrees. I wanted a breeder who placed just as much importance on health, longevity, and temperament. Having raised Goldens for so many years, we’re all too familiar with what happens when popularity takes priority over thoughtful breeding. Unfortunately, Maine C**ns are no exception. Without careful consideration of genetics, health, and breeding pairs, these wonderful animals can be predisposed to serious health problems.
Eventually, we found a breeder with two little girls who were exactly what we were looking for.
I’ve always believed kittens are happier in pairs. More importantly, they tend to direct their mischief toward EACH OTHER instead of driving me crazy and dismantling my house. 😂
And that’s how Rainier and Sitka joined our family.
To say I adore these girls would be an understatement.
They’re confident, affectionate, endlessly curious (and I mean ENDLESSLY), fascinated by water, VOCAL, and surprisingly doglike in so many ways. They’re also huge, quirky, ridiculously beautiful, and have personalities that are wonderfully different from our two domestic shorthairs.
They bring me so much joy just watching them investigate every corner of our home.
My husband, meanwhile, likes to pretend he doesn’t care for them. Which is interesting, considering he faithfully serves them wet food every evening in an obvious attempt to become their favorite person. 😂
The decision to breed them wasn’t one we made lightly.
Over the years, we’ve heard countless well-meaning people say, “She’s such a wonderful dog, I just had to have a litter of puppies from her!”
Unfortunately, loving an animal and producing healthy, well-bred offspring are two very different things. Responsible breeding requires so much more than two beautiful animals with wonderful personalities.
We spent a great deal of time considering whether breeding our girls was something we truly wanted to pursue. Ultimately, with our experience, resources, and commitment to health testing and carefully planned pairings, we felt we could do it, and do it well.
The next challenge was finding the right male.
We knew exactly what we wanted in terms of health, temperament, pedigree, and overall quality, and we weren’t willing to compromise. Understandably, reputable breeders are often selective about offering full breeding rights. We take the same approach with our Goldens.
After a long search, we’re thrilled to share that we’ll be welcoming a magnificent two-year-old male from Alberta this week!
Cue Obadiah, affectionately known as Obie joining our chaos. ♥️
Due to some significant changes in his family’s circumstances, they made the difficult decision to find him a new home. After a great deal of consideration on both sides, we felt he was a wonderful fit for our family and our hopes for the future of Chopaka C**ns.
We’re hopeful that we’ll be welcoming our first litters from Rainier and Sitka within the coming months.
Just as with our Goldens, finding the RIGHT homes will always matter more to us than finding the first available homes. We want families who have taken the time to learn about this extraordinary breed, understand the commitment, and are as excited about their future companions as we are.
I also want to be transparent about something. We don’t have a set number of litters planned, or any intention of becoming a large cattery.
Rainier and Sitka are treasured members of our family, first and foremost. When their breeding days are behind them, they’ll be spayed and remain here with us for the rest of their lives. That commitment naturally limits how many breeding cats we can responsibly welcome into our home, and we’re happy with that.
For those who are new to our family or page, we live on 11 beautiful acres in Washington’s Okanogan Valley, where we have a little hobby farm, raise Golden Retrievers, and are raising three wonderful kids.
One thing our animals will never lack is socialization. Between our children, their friends, and the other animals that share our lives, there’s certainly no shortage of attention, affection, or activity around here!
And finally, a little about our name.
I grew up on beautiful Palmer Lake, one of the many treasures of the Okanogan Valley.
My grandparents built Chopaka Lodge with their own hands, transforming acres of sagebrush into a place that would become the backdrop of so many of my most cherished childhood memories.
Chopaka Mountain is one of the beautiful mountains surrounding the lake, and that name has always held a special place in my heart.
My childhood there, and especially the memories I have of my grandparents, are things incredibly near and dear to my heart.
So when it came time to name our cattery, Chopaka C**ns just felt right. It was a little way of honoring the place and the people who shaped so much of my life.
Our goal is simple: to raise beautiful, healthy, well-socialized Maine C**ns from thoroughly health-tested parents, with the exceptional temperament and qualities that make this breed so special.
We’re excited to share this new chapter with you, introduce you to our cats, and hopefully watch some wonderful families fall in love with their future kittens along the way.
Thank you for being here, and welcome to Chopaka C**ns Cattery! 🐾♥️
