Foals are born agammaglobulinemic, meaning they have no circulating antibodies at birth and are entirely dependent on adequate colostrum intake for passive immunity. When insufficient antibody absorption occurs, Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT) develops, significantly increasing the risk of infectious disease in the neonatal period.

Plasma transfusion is a critical therapeutic and preventive intervention in these cases. Administered intravenously, equine plasma provides immunoglobulins that help establish immune protection, reducing the risk of serious conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, and enteritis, while supporting overall neonatal health.

Plasma is not reserved solely for critically ill foals! In many breeding programs, plasma is routinely administered to healthy newborn foals as a proactive measure to enhance immune defense during the first days of life. This approach is especially valuable when colostrum quality, intake, or timing is uncertain, or when foals are considered higher risk due to environmental or management factors.

Plasma therapy may be used in cases of:
◾️Neonatal foals with diagnosed Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT)
◾️Sick or immunocompromised foals requiring immune support
◾️Select healthy neonates as a proactive measure when colostrum intake or quality is questionable

Discussing neonatal care and plasma availability with your veterinarian before foaling allows for prompt decision-making during this critical window of life. Have questions about plasma therapy or the products we offer? Our team is happy to help!

We recently diagnosed VSV in Cochise county. I know a lot of our clients are worried about Vegas or going back to Canada. Please reach out if you need more information.

How does the Vesicular Stomatitis (VSV) cases in Cochise County affect me going to Vegas?

As of 11/3/25:

Healthy Certificates (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) must be issued by an accredited veterinarian within 7 days of your entry into Nevada. In normal times, it is 30 days.

Also, the horse must not have been exposed to nor located on a VSV confirmed or a VSV suspected premises.

Translation, as if now, the biggest change is going to be when you schedule your veterinarian for the health certificate.

Unfortunately, the current cases is a reminder of why health certificates are so important to get - they help prevent the spread of disease.

The situation is being monitored with changes to health certificates requirements being updated as they are made.

As we wrap up Vet Tech Week, we want to take a moment to reflect on just how amazing my vet tech is.
Her gentle hands, caring heart, and incredible dedication make all the difference for our patients!!!!

From comforting nervous horses, and all the jogging for lameness exams, to going the extra mile every single day, she is the heartbeat of the clinic. πŸ’›

To Skylee Isham thank you for everything you do, not just this week, but every day of the year. I am so grateful to have you as part of the team!
