We have some sad news to share. Blanquita, the only survivor from the house fire that took the lives of her 4 fur-siblings has passed today. The decision to let her go was one we all made together, her family, the rescue and the doctors at Gulf Coast. Blanquita’s health started deteriorating yesterday and she was given 3 units of blood, she got better but today her effort to breathe was visibly worrysome. X-rays were taken and showed her lungs were progressively getting worse, meaning she was probably oozing fluid into her lungs due to the inflammation, it is very likely her lungs were injured during the smoke inhalation. Her fluid balance was out of control. Blood work showed her Bilirubin and kidney values were elevated. Kidneys went up to 1.9 and Bilirubin to 9.1 clearly, we were witnessing multiple organ failure, involving her kidneys and liver, secondary to all the circulating inflammation she had going on. Her doctors were worried that this was just the start of her getting worse progressively, she had a lot of injuries to a lot of her body.
The decision was made and her family accompanied during her release and she is no longer suffering.
As a rescuer, I always have high hopes that we can save the dogs we say yes to, unfortunately, not all get better, despite the efforts spent. I know Blanquita was that beacon of light for the family, giving them hope to feel they didn’t lose all their canine personal pets, but that hope died today and for that, I am very sorry. No one should have to bury their 5 dogs in one week. It’s tragic. Please keep the Lopez- Muñoz family in your hearts and hug your pets tonight.
