My Day 2 of the Canis Conference. Who is excited to talk about disagreements on social media?!?!

Ok, that was just one small part of the day, and it was FABULOUS. We also had great conversations about managing arousal in dogs, why scent detection games can be good for your pet dog, and Dr. Tim Lewis (a personal fave) shared his expertise on how a dog's biology affects behavior.

Mr. Pickles' puppy class got off to a super rough start due to a danger noodle in his own back yard. We started with a quick, leashed potty break before we began, and Pickles was struck in the muzzle by a snake!

We immediately left the area and removed his collar to perform a quick snout to tail assessment. His face was obviously tender and painful, so we headed directly to the closest animal ER.

The staff was fabulous, and Pickles' bloodwork showed evidence of envenomation. He was given pain management, nausea medication and anti-venom and is expected to make a full recovery.

As a PSA, if your dog is ever bitten by a snake, remove any collar, harness or clothing and head to the closest emergency room. If you don't know where that clinic is, let this be your reminder to do an internet search today and program the 3 closest facilities into your phone, including addresses. You'll be glad you did if you ever need it.

Mila started her official leash training today. What do we do to set her up for success?

1. We choose SAFE equipment - a properly fitted harness, a 6-foot leash and tasty treats.
2. We begin in a low-distraction environment. There's a fantastic little path between her living room and front door.
3. We keep training sessions under 5 minutes to begin.

We tailored her training plan with measurable goals to allow her family to know exactly what her next steps should be. No two dogs are alike, but everyone deserves to learn with kindness.

Most of our puppy class graduation take place at parks and cafes. With a name like Maui, is it any surprise this puppy wanted her final lesson to take place in the water?

This lesson was all about safety. We want her to be able to exit the pool independently if needed.

Never leave your dog unattended around the pool. Practice supervision and introduce swimming gently and positively while preparing them for an unexpected instance where they may need to get themselves to safety solo. We could not be any more proud!

Congratulations to Bonnie and Oakley and their parents Daniela and David on puppy class graduation! Bonnie is actually the puppy, but her big brother Oakley joined in her lessons in a show of solidarity. Wouldn't you know it?... They are both brilliant!

Graduation took place at a beautiful covered deck in Old Town Tomball. The humans got some gourmet treats, and the pups got plenty of treats for good choices.

Way to go!

How do you add a new puppy to a home with an older dog? Thoughtfully and with love. Luca is doing great with his 16-year-old doggie brother because his parents started with fantastic preparation.

Luca has a designated separate area when big brother needs a break. Interactions are always supervised, and each pup still gets one-on-one time with their parents.

Well, yes, Maggie. Sometimes at least.

Part of comprehensive puppy training is teaching them they are ok on their own for appropriate length of time - say, long enough for a person to shower or get a package off the front steps. Over time, we extend it so you can go grocery shopping, take a work call or help kids with their homework. Certainly puppies need love and attention, and they also need skills to function in a human household and sometimes that means not being the center of attention. (Maggie was shocked, but she caught on quickly and might actually enjoy some me time of her own now.)
