We wanted to take a moment to share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Officer Dana Slay.
Many of us knew Dana, and she wasn't just a client of ours. She was someone we talked to, saw over the years, and came to know through her love for her dog, Sketcher.
We all have our own Sketcher stories. He was a character—larger than life, just like his mom. Dana loved that dog fiercely and did so much for him throughout the years. We were lucky enough to be trusted with his care, and through that, we were lucky enough to get to know Dana, too.
Dana spent 33 years with the Toledo Police Department, serving this city in so many ways. She worked the streets, served in Community Services, mentored young people, and was deeply involved in her community. In 2023, she made history as the first Black officer and first Black woman to hold TPD Badge No. 1.
But beyond the career and the history, she was Dana.
She was someone who showed up for people, cared deeply, and made an impact on everyone around her.
I think that's why her passing feels different. We didn't just lose a client. We lost someone who had become part of our hospital family.
Please keep Dana's family, friends, fellow officers, and everyone who loved her in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Rest easy, Dana. Thank you for letting us be part of your story—and for giving us so many Sketcher stories to remember you by. ❤️
