🚨 ATTENTION TOLEDO PET OWNERS: PET SAFETY ALERT (GMA CHEMSPILL) 🚨
Following the glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) leak on Progress Avenue in North Toledo, emergency orders remain active. GMA vapors can cause severe respiratory, eye, and skin irritation in both humans and pets.
Because pets breathe faster and are closer to ground level, act now to protect them:
🏠 If Sheltering-in-Place
Bring Pets Indoors Immediately: Keep all dogs, cats, and small animals inside.
Skip Dog Walks: Limit outdoor access to brief, essential potty breaks—or use p*e pads indoors.
Seal Your Home: Turn off central A/C, heating, and exhaust fans. Keep all windows and doors tightly closed.
Block Hiding Spots: Close off tight areas (under beds, behind couches) so pets are easy to reach if an evacuation is declared.
🚗 If Evacuating
NEVER Leave Pets Behind: If it’s unsafe for you, it’s unsafe for them.
Leash & Carrier First: Secure pets in carriers or on sturdy leashes before stepping outside—fumes and sirens can induce panic.
Grab Pet Essentials: Pack food, bottled water, medications, leashes, and medical records.
🧼 If Exposed to Fumes or Chemical Residue
Protect Yourself: Wear gloves and a mask before touching exposed animals.
Wipe & Wash: Wipe down paws and fur with damp towels, then bathe thoroughly with warm water and mild pet shampoo.
Flush Eyes: Gently rinse irritated eyes with lukewarm water or sterile saline.
Call a Vet: Seek immediate veterinary care if your pet exhibits coughing, heavy panting, eye discharge, skin redness, or vomiting.
