September is International Assistance Dog Month. Assistance dog or service dogs, offer a variety of support for different disabilities. These dogs are life savers and are crucial to help people gain independence and make their lives more manageable.
At Legacy, we off r a variety of tasks across different disabilities. Here’s some of the ones we offer.
Mobility dogs are used to help those with mobility problems just as walking, standing & sitting, retrieving items & helping with a wheelchair or other mobility aid. A mobility dog can provide stability and keep the handler walking/wheeling at a safe pace.
Psychiatric dogs help with mental illnesses such as anxiety, bipolar, PTSD & depression. The dog can help by providing comfort, retrieving medication, grounding the handler & sometimes they may have other tasks like heart rate detection to detect oncoming anxiety/panic attacks.
Allergy detection dogs are trained to detect certain allergies. Riot was trained for tree nut detections. They can smell food & other objects to see if there is an allergen present. People with allergies have a hard time eating in public. Even though something may say it’s nut free, you can get a service dog to double check everything for you.
Medical alert dogs can help with a variety of disabilities such as diabetes, fainting disorders, seizures & other medical conditions by retrieving medication, watching over the handler when they are unconscious or getting help if needed.
Multi purpose service dogs mean they offer a variety of tasks and support. It can be a mix of the previous dogs like medical alert & psychiatric alert.
