Growing Up in the Barn

One of my favorite parts of running a program is getting to watch young riders grow up.

Some of these girls started riding with us when they were little. They’ve grown in height, confidence, independence, and skill but more importantly, they’ve grown into horsewomen.

Over the years, they learn that riding is about so much more than what happens in the show ring. It’s learning how to care for a horse, understand their needs, solve problems, handle setbacks, work hard when no one is watching, and take pride in doing things the right way.

They mature not only as riders, but as young adults. They learn responsibility, patience, resilience, and the importance of putting their horse first.

And somewhere along the way, the little girls who once needed help with everything become the ones teaching the younger riders, helping in the barn, making thoughtful decisions, and taking ownership of their horses and their riding.

That is one of the greatest rewards of this job.

The ribbons are wonderful. The accomplishments are exciting. But watching these young women grow into confident, capable horsewomen is something I will always be most proud of.

Start young. Grow together.

Featuring Gemma Kuten Lent, Avery Herfert and Gabriella Scott.

What a week at Fieldstone!

We had an incredible week filled with great riding, exciting milestones, and so many moments that made us proud of this group.

🏆 Avery Herfert & Charly Chaplin of Picobello Z had a fantastic week, earning Reserve Champion in the USHJA 2’6”, Low Children’s Hunters, and Child Equitation.

Olivia Herfert & Charly Chaplin of Picobello Z followed with two 2nds in the 18–35 Hunters before stepping up into a huge USHJA 3’ division, where they earned 4th and 5th.

Colleen Curry & Louie Vuitton were Reserve Champion in Equitation 36+ and put in great rounds with good ribbons in both the USHJA 2’9” and 3’ Adult Hunters.

Gemma Kuten Lent & Manfred continue to develop an impressive partnership. They earned a well-deserved win in a large, competitive Child Equitation group on the flat and added ribbons in the Low Child Hunters and Equitation over fences.

Emma Wallace & Encore are making great progress, and as the week went on, they really began to find their way around both rings. So exciting to watch this partnership continue to grow!

Kim Herfert & Tiny Dancer continued their reign in the hack, taking the top prize once again, and finished the week with three 2nds over fences in the Green 2’9”.

Tiny Dancer also had a busy week with Gabriella Scott, carrying her around the Low Children’s Hunters with a win in the under saddle and a 2nd in the Equitation under saddle. Most importantly, their results helped Gabriella qualify for MHC Finals! 🎉

Eva Longobardi & Carcadee Z also qualified for MHC Finals and picked up some great ribbons in the Adult Hunters over fences.

We couldn’t be more proud of this group. From the experienced partnerships continuing to build on their success to the newer partnerships finding their confidence and rhythm, it was a week full of progress, hard work, and some really special rides.

A huge thank you to our riders, families, horses, and everyone who makes these weeks possible. (so busy we didn’t take many photos)

This month we highlight Olivia and Avery Herfert.

Being a horse trainer’s child isn’t always glamorous.

It’s early mornings, late nights, cleaning stalls, loading trailers, feeding horses, and helping wherever you’re needed. It’s learning to work hard long before your friends are awake and staying until the last horse is tucked in. It’s pressure, responsibility, and sacrifices that most people never see.

But it’s also one of the greatest gifts.

It teaches commitment, resilience, teamwork, and pride. It teaches you to show up even when you’re tired, to support others, to celebrate everyone’s successes, and to understand that the best things in life are earned—not given.

Watching my daughters grow up in this life has been incredibly special. Their grace in and out of the saddle, their work ethic, and the quiet confidence they’ve developed make me proud every day. One of the greatest compliments is when another trainer recognizes not just their riding ability, but the horsewomen they’re becoming.

This lifestyle isn’t easy, but the lessons it teaches last a lifetime. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, and I’m so grateful my girls get to grow up surrounded by horses, hard work, community, and a family business built with love.
