Willow is an extremely nervous girl who is very uncomfortable with strangers, certain noises, large bags, and a number of other things including her own dad sometimes. Before we can help this sweet girl get confidence outside the home, we need her to trust us enough to want to work with us around. We have been slowly building her trust by applying the “name game” and well timed reinforcement to encourage her to be brave with us. Her first session she stayed on the couch in her “safe spot” and was able to build to us calling her name and getting rewarded for looking. This video is of her third session where she voluntarily followed me from the couch to the kitchen table to get snacks while I tapped my feet or wiggled in my chair. All she had to do to eat snacks was respond when I called her name or stay out when I was moving around. Over time her trust in us will grow and we will be able to begin working on her confidence outside of the home as well.

Storm is making great progress on her neighborhood walks. In this video she watched a bicyclist and runner pass close by. She then made the decision to respond to her mom calling her name instead of barking or running towards them. So her mom whipped out the highest level of reward she had for her: the game of tug. Through this process Storm is learning mom is way more fun than any distraction and is less likely to be interested in them the next time they pass by.

During this session we worked on building Benito’s confidence around a sliding door he finds scary. All he had to do was look at me or watch the door and not back away while I rattled it to earn a treat. After about 20min he was doing so well he began to approach me to get closer to the treats so, I increased the difficulty by pushing the door open and closed. We were able to apply this to not only this door, but a plastic bag, flag hanging on a door k**b, and a different “scary” door. He quickly realized that the door was worth far less than me. By continuing to expose him to “scary” things and ensuring a positive outcome, his confidence will only continue to grow and over time he will get comfortable even faster.

This is an “emergency brake” that anyone with a puller should know. Though we are working on Kylo’s pulling, it’s hard for his sister to handle him when he gets over stimulated. I taught her this emergency break that utilizes body weight and leg position to create an anchor that will stop a dog from being able to move forward. Though this is not a long term solution, it means that she can walk him safely, even if the neighbors dogs come out barking. If you have a dog who pulls and a child who handles them on leash, this is a good skill to have.

The average person is not equipped to fulfill the physical and mental needs of the average Belgian Shepherd. As a result, we are seeing an influx of these dogs in shelters in our state of Florida. If you are interested in this breed, but are not able to provide them with a “job” or working outlet, then simply get another breed.

We had a great morning of training today with . We started the day with our first session with service dog Ty. He focused mostly on obedience. Then, we took Prometheus and Psyche out for a spin. Psyche worked on some relationship building with Melanie while Prometheus worked on smoothing out his return to a heel command.
