San Clemente Training Welcome to San Clemente Training, where we help you reach you dog goals.

The biggest mistake made by people trying to meet a nervous pup is to encroach further into that dog’s space. It’s even worse if they are talking at the dog saying “Its ok! I’m nice.” This kind of behavior is well intentioned, but communicates something entirely different in dog body language.

Instead, if you want to befriend a nervous dog, ignore them at first. Whenever the dog approaches and displays calm behavior, toss them a snack. Do this each time you meet the dog until they consistently approach you without hesitation. Then you can try talking to them, offering treats out of your hands, and if they are really bold with you, even an try for an under the chin scratch!

Lady needs a home ASAP! Please help us find her forever people by liking, sharing, reposting, and commenting on this post!

Lady is a 3 year old mini pit we took in after her family moved out of state and abandoned her. Due to no fault of her own, we are no longer in the position to continue housing her. So we are urgently searching for her forever people.

Lady is rambunctious and full of energy. Her perfect family will spend lots of time playing with her and cuddling with her. She is house and crate trained. She is very smart and picks up training quickly. Lady loves other dogs, but can get a little too pushy with them so we would require meet and greets with any potential new brothers or sisters. Lady is safe and affectionate with children as long as adults are mindful of her energy and step in to keep her from jumping when excited. Lady will chase cats and we would not adopt her out to a household with small animals. Lady also has chronic skin allergies that require supplements to keep under control.

We love Arlo almost as much as he loved training during his first session with us! This cutie had us dying of laughter while acting like a wind up toy whenever he was recalled. We can’t wait for his next session and are so excited to help him reach his goal of becoming a therapy dog one day.

Halloween is one of the most fun times of year for public access training. Pet dogs can take advantage of displays at places like TSC, Lowe’s and/or trunk or treat events. Service dogs and service dogs in training can go to additional places like Home Depot and Spirit Halloween. The most important part to consider in deciding where to go is how to set your dog up for success. If your dog has never been to Lowe’s before, don’t expect them to handle all the distractions of the store and the scary animatronics. Definitely don’t expect them to be able to navigate a packed trunk or treat event either.

There are lots of ways to teach a dog to walk backwards, but this is one of the easiest. Point behind them and step into their space while saying “back.” Keep stepping into them until they take a step backwards and immediately reward. Repeat this until you can take a single step while pointing and your dog takes a step backwards. From here you can build to them backing with only the verbal or hand que, backing long distances, or even walking backwards in the heel!

When starting to train a “spin” or “turn,” have a high value treat in your hand and slowly lure the dog’s nose in a wide circle. If the circle is to small, they will stop so make sure to keep it nice and wide. Don’t let them eat the treat until they have completed the circle and you have marked the action with “yes.” When they can consistently follow your hand without getting stuck, ask again with the same hand motion, but no treat. As soon as they finish the circle, mark and reward. Repeat this until they can do it without pausing at all. Slowly bring your hand higher each time, but keep the wide circular motion until you can do this at the same height as your stomach. Make sure you aren’t having to repeat yourself or help your dog out to much before moving on! From here, you just slowly make your hand signal smaller and smaller until eventually, you’re using a single finger to draw a small circle!
