Teaching “down” isn’t just about getting a puppy into position, it’s about helping them understand what the word means. 🐾

With Mia, I’m guiding her from a sit into the down position, then pairing the word “down” while the behavior is happening. This helps build the association between the word and the behavior we’re seeing.

The goal isn’t just obedience, it’s creating clear communication so our dogs can understand what we’re asking.

🐾 Meet Piglet!

Sometimes the sweetest dogs are the ones who just quietly stay by your side. ❤️

Piglet is a 2-year-old girl looking for her person, to be the perfect constant companion.

She can be a little shy at first, but once she feels comfortable, her sweet personality starts to shine. She loves getting attention, enjoying some good rubs, and simply being near her people.

And if you’re looking for a walking buddy, Piglet is your girl. She’s great on leash and naturally stays close by your side, making her an easy companion for getting out and enjoying some time together.

She may not be the dog who immediately demands everyone's attention, but give her a little time, and you might find a very special friend waiting to choose you. ❤️

If you’re looking for a new best friend, consider visiting the Miami County Animal Shelter and seeing if Piglet might be the one!

Please share her post so we can help her find the person who’s been looking for a dog just like her.

You can also make a difference by supporting MCPAW - Miami County Partners for Animal Welfare and their efforts to raise funds for a new Miami County Animal Shelter.

Enrichment isn’t just about keeping an animal busy, it can create opportunities for communication, choice, and connection.

Small interactions like this can build trust and stronger relationships between humans and animals.

Leash pulling doesn’t always need a leash correction.

In this clip, Echo gets ahead of me, so I simply stop moving. When he checks back in, we continue walking to create another learning opportunity, and I reinforce him for choosing to stay connected and walk beside me.

The goal isn’t just to stop the pulling. It’s to help the dog understand what behavior makes the walk continue.

Small moments of communication like this can turn into much more consistent loose-leash walking over time.

What does success around a trigger actually look like?

In this session with Lainey, we worked on her response to other dogs while on leash.

As the neighbor dog approaches, Lainey notices and remains aware of the trigger, but instead of escalating, she redirects into a simple forage game using treats and kibble in the grass.

The goal isn’t to make her ignore the other dog. It’s to create an environment where she can decompress, engage in enrichment, and make a calmer choice while the trigger is present.

That ability to notice without reacting is a valuable part of building more successful walks. 🐾
