A great picture (Thank you Julia Smith Imagery!) popped up of Phoenix -Streak N Wild- and me from TURNIN’ FOR A CURE, and this one carries more weight than just a run. This race had a Survivors Class — one I was able to run in because of my own challenges — and I ran it for my dad, who passed away from bladder cancer. I wore purple, the color for my cancer, Leiomyosarcoma, and it felt right to show up in it.

Phoenix and I didn’t do as well as we’d hoped, but the day wasn’t wrapped up in the clock. I wore my father’s belt and buckle when I ran, carrying a piece of him with me into the arena. I think folks might see me ride in it more often. I like the way it made me feel.

Thank you to all the sponsors who stepped up to support this event — there were so many who helped make the day possible. I'm sharing a spotlight this week on one of “our” girls — and while the post was wonderful, I want to add a little more, because around here, Clairebelle is so much more than just a boarder.

Her family has been part of Two Hats Ranch for years. They started with lessons, moved into leasing one of our ponies, and eventually brought home their own. Through all of that, one thing hasn’t changed: this kid shows up.

Most mornings — even during softball season, even while juggling her small animals — she’s here helping with chores. No fanfare, no fuss, just steady work and a quiet sense of responsibility that’s rare in someone her age.

She rides with purpose, too. She works her horse for performance, dabbles in gymkhana, and when I swing the gate open and yell “Cops and Robbers,” she and Kylo are already halfway across the arena, grinning like they’ve been waiting all day for that moment.

Her smile is warm, her humor is dry and subtle, and her presence in the barn is one of those things you don’t fully appreciate until you imagine the place without her — and realize it wouldn’t feel the same.

Clairebelle isn’t just a boarder. She’s part of the heartbeat of this ranch, and she’s a favorite here for a reason.

Clarabelle's current 4-H project is her market lamb, and she also participated in our 4-H county Horse Fair. Her favorite memory is last year's auction and she is most looking forward to showing her market lamb and learning more about showing at this year's fair.

Tillamook 4‑H Horse Fair is this Saturday, which means the barn currently looks like a saddle‑cleaning boot camp. These kids are lined up with soap, rags, and sheer determination, trying to convince their tack to look like it hasn’t lived through an Oregon winter.

They’ve put in the work all year — Showmanship, Equitation, Trail, C**t Training — and now the nerves are kicking in. You can practically taste the tension, but they’re dialed in and ready to step into the ring.

It’s showtime, and they’ve earned it.

I have written many posts these past months about Crystal Rilee Park losing its long-standing status as a hiker/horseman-only park. Judging by the many thousands of views, both followers and non-followers have been right here in the trenches with us.

So, here's the rest of the story, and a hopeful path forward. Despite months of sensible testimony and overwhelming public support for preserving Rilee Park as a peaceful haven for hikers and equestrians, the Chehalem Park & Recreation District Board voted 3–2 to allow mountain biking back into the park. While the decision was heartbreaking, it was expected. The three members have made it clear that their votes have not changed since February. But their actions inspired a new path forward.

Rather than giving up, a dedicated group of volunteers worked together to create a proposed Rural Heritage Park ordinance. If approved by voters, this new designation would help protect the open space character, hiking, equestrian, and agricultural heritage, and natural beauty of special places like Rilee Park – for generations to come. We want the Rilee's generous land gift to be kept as intended. Donations are helping fund the legal work and public outreach that are needed to bring this initiative before the voters.

If we don't speak up, this park will join the long list of "places we used to go." Let's preserve at least a few pristine trails here in Oregon that are NOT shared with bikes.

Rilee Park is a cause I deeply believe in. As my way of helping, Perrydale Trails is donating the facility on August 2, and each riding fee that day will go directly toward saving this special park. We are located at 15900 W. Perrydale Rd., Sheridan, Oregon.
