Mini rant ahead: This is something many of us encounter across various fields and industries. I’ve personally experienced it or witnessed it through friends who have businesses.
Please, do not ask for discounted services from someone who has spent months, years, or even decades perfecting their craft and investing in their education. We all try to make our costs as reasonable as possible, and often we even offer discounts because we empathize with rising costs. But asking for further discounts is a major insult to those who have dedicated themselves to their trade. Imagine if someone walked into your office and said, “Please do the same amount of work, but we’re cutting your pay because it’s someone you know, the person can’t afford the full service, or whatever other reason.” We would tell our supervisor no!

While certain tasks might seem straightforward or easy—whether it’s Photoshopping an image, taking a professional photo, creating an ad or logo, fitting a saddle, teaching a lesson, or training a horse—consider the true effort behind them. All things that take time have value.
Ask yourself: How much time, research, and physical energy would it take for you to achieve the same results? What would it be worth to you then? If you don’t feel the person charging the amount is worth it, then move along. But know you’re risking lesser quality results.
Remember, skills and expertise are invaluable, and they deserve the respect and recognition they’ve earned.

Exciting news! I am now incorporating balance/stability pads into fittings and evaluations. These are similar in concept to Surefoot-style pads, but not the branded version.

The idea is to give the horse a different surface to stand on can help encourage relaxation, proprioception, postural changes, and body awareness. Some horses visibly soften, stretch, shift weight differently, or relax tension patterns while standing on them. It can also give us another piece of information during an assessment.

This is great for horses to learn their balance. This is also great for horses coming back from an injury or a horse known to have asymmetry and compensatory patterns.

Let me know if you’re interested in adding this own your appointment!

The saddle shield is HERE!!!

This saddle rack is designed to protect your saddle and keep the panels in top shape. Other saddle racks will dent and damage your panels, sometimes permanently. This rack completely eliminates that risk, plus no more pool noodles or creative "fixes" that also still cause damage.

What is even better is that it's also designed to be portable! The easy adjustable pin design means you can put it in your barn isle, car, and soon there will be a trailer option!

Retail is $150. Message me here to purchase yours today! Quantities are limited, but more are being produced and arriving. But don't wait, grab yours today before they sell out!

I saw this on a horse sale listing recently and it hurt my heart for this horse. I realize most sale programs can’t have custom fitted saddles since horses rarely stay all that long…but there are options that are at least not detrimental to the horse. I encourage any professional to has a fitter come out and explain the basics of saddle fitting. This way you can at least, at a high level tell if a saddle fits or not.

Anyone local to me that wants a saddle fitting clinic, I’d be happy to do one! The more we know the better we can do!

We owe it to the horse.

This was from an appointment I went on today—and this isn’t a subtle fit issue. This is a saddle that is visibly unstable—sliding, shifting, lacking balance—and yet the brand is still insisting it “fits.”

And this is where it gets frustrating… because this is how riders start second-guessing themselves.

You see it. You feel it. Your horse is telling you something.
But then you’re told it’s fine… and suddenly you’re questioning your own instincts.

That’s not education. That’s pressure.

A true fitter would look at this and say, “This isn’t stable—let’s figure out why.”
Not dismiss it. Not explain it away. Not try to make it work because it’s their saddle.

Because the reality is—no saddle should need to be justified when it’s clearly not working.

The signs are right there:
• Movement where there shouldn’t be
• Lack of stability
• A horse that has to compensate

That’s not a gray area.

And honestly—credit to this rider. She’s advocating for her horse and not ignoring what’s right in front of her, even when she’s being told otherwise. That’s not always easy.

So if you ever find yourself in this position:
Trust what you’re seeing.
Trust what you’re feeling.
And don’t be afraid to get another opinion.

Because good fitting doesn’t make you feel unsure.

It gives you clarity.

Can you believe both these saddles are the same exact tree? But look closer...Have you paid attention to your saddle's channel width? Most riders trust what they get is ok...but what if I told you it matters more than you think?

The gullet/channel must provide enough space to clear the horse’s spinous processes and the sensitive connective tissues that run alongside the spine. Without proper clearance, the saddle can create painful pressure, restrict movement, and lead to long-term discomfort.

But channel width also affects the balance, stability, and overall fit of the saddle. A channel that’s too narrow may cause the saddle to tip, rock, or overload the panels. One that’s too wide for the horse can make the saddle unstable or shift pressure to the outer edges.

Why we may widen or narrow a channel:
Channel width isn’t one-size-fits-all; adjusting it is sometimes a strategic choice to achieve the best balance for a particular horse.

• Widening the channel can help a saddle sit lower and closer to flatter-backed horses or those who are croup-high. By widening it appropriately, we can help the saddle level out, stabilize, and distribute pressure more evenly.

• Narrowing the channel may be beneficial for horses with a more pronounced shape, such as narrower or more A-framed backs. A slightly narrower channel can provide them with the correct amount of clearance without creating excessive width that would cause instability or pressure on the outer panels.

In short, channel width directly influences spinal comfort, pressure distribution, saddle balance, and the horse’s ability to move freely. It’s one of the many reasons thoughtful, individualized fitting makes such a difference.

I have many horses that I fit that have strong preferences on width. Never assume! Every horse will tell you once ridden what they prefer.

What Do You See Going On With This Back?

Take a second and really look -- What stands out to you?

Do you see hollowing, dips, or uneven muscle? Does the back look like it’s working… or protecting itself?

Here’s the thing: The back tells the story.

A horse moving correctly will:
✔️ Lift through the topline
✔️ Carry evenly
✔️ Develop muscle in the right places

A horse struggling with saddle fit often shows:
❌ Hollowing or dropped back
❌ Muscle loss behind the shoulders
❌ Uneven development

And over time… that becomes their “normal.”

Static Saddle Fit: The First Step—Not the Final Answer

Before you ever get in the saddle, we start with static fit.

This is how the saddle sits on the horse at rest—and it gives us a baseline.

We’re looking at:
✔️ Tree width & angle
✔️ Wither and spine clearance
✔️ Panel contact
✔️ Balance front to back
✔️ Saddle length

If these aren’t right standing still… they won’t be right in motion.

BUT here’s what’s important 👇

👉 Static fit is just the starting point.

A saddle can look perfect in the barn aisle…
…and still fail once the horse starts moving.

Because horses don’t perform at a standstill.

They lift, swing, engage, and change shape with every stride.

So yes—static fit matters.

But it’s only step one in the bigger picture of true saddle fit.
