Move over K-9 units.
A Brazilian prison started using a flock of "geese agents" as a high-alert security measure to prevent inmate escapes.
In the southern state of Santa Catarina, the Sao Pedro de Alcantara prison has introduced an unconventional but highly effective layer of security: a patrol of vigilant geese.
These birds, dubbed "geese agents," waddle through the green spaces between the facility’s inner fence and outer wall, tasked with alerting staff to any unauthorized movement. Prison director Marcos Roberto de Souza explains that while the facility utilizes electronic and human surveillance, the geese provide a final, sensitive layer of defense. Led by a lead goose named Piu-Piu, the flock utilizes its natural territorial instincts to ensure no inmate slips away unnoticed.
The transition from traditional guard dogs to geese was driven by both financial efficiency and the prison's unique environment. Maintaining a flock of geese is significantly more affordable than raising a canine unit, and the facility’s quiet location plays perfectly to the birds' strengths. Because the site remains remarkably silent during both day and night, the geese can detect the slightest disturbances, responding with loud honks that immediately alert the security team. This low-tech, high-impact solution highlights a creative approach to modern surveillance, proving that nature's own warning systems can be just as formidable as high-tech alternatives.
