Some of you may know that Milkw**d is an important pollinator. This w**d has deep roots that help it survive both fire and drought, if you have river-bottom ground you have likely seen this w**d in that area. It is also common in ditches/roadside, meadows, and waste areas.

Some of the effects that milkw**d can have on your livestock are cardiotoxic effects, respiratory, digestive, nervous system effects, colic and diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. This plant is most toxic during rapid growth and if consumed in large quantities. While this is a toxic plant animals generally tend to stay away from it.

With the lingering heat there are a few things to be aware of if your livestock end up off water for an extended period of time. You may wonder what really happens when an animal gets dehydrated. When an animal becomes dehydrated sodium levels accumulate in tissues and in the brain. Once an animal is dehydrated and then given too much water, the water rushes to their brain where the salt is accumulated. This can then cause seizures and even death.

While the animal does need to drink water immediately, it needs to be in small amounts.

There are many different varieties of clover that grow in Southwest Montana. They have several different effects on livestock including photosensitization, profuse salivation/dehydration, hemorrhaging, bruising and anemia. These varieties include Alsike Clover, Red Clover, and Yellow Sweet Clover.
