Painting the feet of a goldeneye. It requires an airbrush with several layers of different paint colors, and some pan pastels for added detail. It's amazing what a little paint can do to those faded feet!

Putting together the hawk's base. A simple round piece of pine helps keep the branch sturdy, while a coat of stain makes it look nice. I can create similar bases using different hardwood as well, such as walnut. The branch came from burned pine from the Cameron Peak Fire/High Park Fire in Colorado.

Working on an old hen goldeneye I've had frozen for quite some time. This is a personal bird that was gifted to me years ago. It has lots of damage on the back of the head, but will do just fine as a little warm up before lots of waterfowl come through the doors!

Coming soon...
I have the honor to preserve a juvenile cooper's hawk for the City of Englewood. It is always very special to work on unique specimens that are used for education. Updates will be posted once the taxidermy process is started on this beautiful bird.

As a reminder, most people in the United States are not allowed to keep specimens such as birds of prey and songbirds among others because of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which ensures the protection of native birds. However, places like universities, wildlife rehabilitation centers, certain government education facilities (such as Colorado parks and wildlife or city and county nature programs and centers), as well as Native Americans are allowed to keep migratory bird taxidermy if they obtain special federal permits.
I am able to keep this hawk temporarily while I work on it due to a federal taxidermy permit.
