Earlier this week, we asked for help transporting a stray German Shepherd found in Hallstead. Many assumed the worst—that he had been hit by a car.
But the truth… is even harder to process.
This sweet boy—now lovingly named Chance—was shot.
His leg was shattered, filled with bullet fragments, and he had additional injuries that needed immediate care. The damage was severe, and Chance underwent an extensive surgery involving a steel plate and pins to repair his leg. He now faces a long recovery process, including strict rest and an additional pin removal surgery 6–8 weeks later.
And yet—despite everything he has endured… Chance is nothing but love.
He is gentle.
He is kind.
He leans into you like he’s always known you.
All he wants… is to be close, to feel safe, to be held.
We will never understand how someone could do this to him.
But we will make sure his story doesn’t end here.
💛 Thank you again to Carolyn and Tifani for stepping up without hesitation—getting him to safety and into the hands of Southtown Veterinary for immediate care. Because of you, Chance has a fighting shot.
And in the middle of all this heartbreak… there is something beautiful.
Tifani fell completely in love with Chance and has offered to foster him throughout his long recovery process. Instead of healing in a shelter kennel, Chance will recover in a home—surrounded by comfort, patience, and love. He will get all the TLC he could ever ask for, and he will never have to spend his recovery alone.
Now… he needs all of us.
💰 Estimated surgery cost: starting at $8,000
This does not include follow-ups, medications, his 6-week post-op surgery, or ongoing recovery care.
Time and time again, our small but mighty shelter steps up and says YES to the desperate animals who need us most. When others simply can’t take on another urgent medical case, we find a way—no matter the cost, no matter the risk.
But we don’t do this alone…
Every life we save, every emergency we take on, is only possible because of the incredible generosity of our community and our loyal supporters. You are the reason we can keep saying “yes” when it matters most.
Chance kept fighting through unimaginable pain.
Now it’s our turn to fight alongside him.
Please consider donating today so that we never have to turn an animal like Chance away.
Every dollar matters and goes directly to life-changing care for our often desperate, but always most deserving animals.
