Tis the Season Friends🙄🫶🏻💜

The shortening days of late summer and fall are what usually trigger the annual molt, and if you keep chickens, you can almost watch the season change right there in the coop. One week everybody looks perfectly normal, and the next there are feathers scattered all over the run and a hen that suddenly looks like she had a run-in with a lawn mower. Egg production may slow way down or stop for a while too, which can be alarming the first time you see it.

There’s a lot going on under those scruffy feathers. The hen is shedding worn-out plumage and growing an entirely new set, including those funny-looking pin feathers that eventually unfurl into new feathers. That takes a surprising amount of energy and protein, so some birds get quieter and spend more time resting while their bodies put more resources into growing feathers instead of producing eggs. Those new pin feathers can also be tender, so this isn’t the best time for a lot of unnecessary handling.

I don’t try to rush my hens through a molt. I keep a complete, balanced poultry feed as the foundation of their diet, make sure they always have fresh water, and occasionally offer protein-rich treats like mealworms without letting treats replace their regular feed. Mostly, I keep the coop clean, their routine steady, and stress as low as possible. Molting can take several weeks and every hen seems to molt on her own schedule, but eventually the ragged little yard dinosaur disappears and that beautiful, freshly feathered hen shows up again.
