We want to wish everyone good luck this weekend for southern opener! Shoot straight and be safe!

Here are some tips to keep in mind if you shoot a bird that you wish to mount.

Dos:
• Keep your bird cool and dry, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight
• Wrap the bird in a plastic bag (ziplocks are nice, but any plastic bag will do) to prevent freezer burn
• Remove as much air as possible from the bag
• Label the bag with the bird's species, s*x, date and location of kill
• Tuck the bird's head under a wing to prevent the neck from breaking
• Place the bag in a freezer where it won't get smashed

Don'ts:
• Don't store the bird in a brown paper bag or newspaper
• Don't stuff the bird into pantyhose
• Don't expose the bird to direct sunlight
• Don't put the bird in your game bag
• Don’t vacuum seal your bird
• Place bird on a game strap
• Gut or breast out your bird
• Wring the bird’s neck to dispatch it
Additional tips
• Wrap the head and feet in wet paper towels to prevent them from drying out
• Gently smooth the wings against the body before wrapping
• When you shoot a bird that is a candidate for taxidermy, I generally recommend retrieving the bird yourself, if possible, instead of allowing a dog to retrieve it.

Today is southern waterfowl opener in Wisconsin! Here are a few tips to best preserve your trophy.

1. NO PANTYHOSE
2. NO VACUUM SEALING
3. Keep bagged birds cool and out of direct sunlight while in the field.
4. Tuck heads under the wing or against the body.
5. For best results, wrap head and feet in wet paper towel.
