October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month, a time to reflect on the importance of the keeping our pets healthy, safe, and well cared for.

Cooler weather doesn't mean the bugs are gone!

Here in The Columbia River Gorge, fleas and ticks stay active well into fall, and with the warmer fall weather this year, mosquitoes that carry heartworm are still around too.

Keep your pet on year-round prevention, and if you're running low or if you have questions about preventative measures, we can help!

Meet Gordita! 🐾

This sweet little girl, Gordita, came in for her very first visit with us!

With those big ears and those sweet eyes, she certainly made a great first impression. We’re so happy to welcome Gordita to our veterinary family and look forward to watching her grow! 🐶

Salmon fishing in the Columbia River Gorge is a big part of our community. 🐟

As salmon and steelhead make their way through our area, we want to share an important reminder for pet owners:

Never feed your dog raw salmon, steelhead, or their meat or skin!

Raw or undercooked salmon and trout can carry a parasitic fluke called Nanophyetus salmincola, which can be infected with the bacteria Neorickettsia helminthoeca — the cause of Salmon Poisoning Disease (SPD) in dogs.

Salmon Poisoning Disease can be serious and potentially fatal if left untreated.

Please keep raw fish, scraps, skin, and carcasses safely away from your dogs. What’s a local tradition for us can be dangerous for them. 🐾
