Hobbes Haven is wishing kittens, mama cats and human cat parents all, a Happy National Kitten Day!

Feral and stray kittens are large miracles in tiny little bodies, they face a dangerous world from the day they are born, and often only 1 out of 5 survive into adulthood (1 year old). Working as a rescue and small shelter this season, I have received a steep wave of requests seeking support with kittens:
- Mama cat died and left the kittens
- We have a couple of females we didn’t fix and they came back pregnant
- We started feeding one feral cat and now have a colony
- My neighbor won’t fix his cats and they keep having babies
- Mama cat got into my basement and had her babies
- Etc.

I saw one rescue state that the kitten over population crisis will only be subsided if the folks who have cats come across them, are the ones to step into responsibility to help take care of them. Too often it is easy to pass on the responsibility, but sadly the support extended to the rescues and shelters is little to non existent.
Community- please remember that the rescues doing this work can only move forward with the support from the community, or what is actually happening is the community is squeezing out the few rescues and shelters because of lack of support, that they are stretched thin to the breaking point. If you need help with cats and kittens, and can’t foster or volunteer, please consider donating for veterinary services, food, or supplies to the shelters and rescues. Your support is valued, appreciated and used for the benefit of the animals directly.

Queenie is a gorgeous and regal girl who loves her mane brushed while she is giving you doe her eyes. Queenie truly is a beautiful girl with bright golden almond shaped eyes, who looks at you very thoughtfully and with love in her eyes. She learned to trust humans through a lot of time, patience and special attention. She now comes out of her play areas seeking affection like a good body rub and big hug. She likes being near humans on her time, and is a confident girl who likes what she likes when she wants it, and appreciates a human who can respect her choices and bubble when she needs it. Queenie is definitely a royal queen type of personality where she is very confident, she likes to get attention when she asks for it, and she likes to look pretty and be nicely and respectfully treated. She enjoys suspending calm time relaxing and perching with her bonded brother Sage while watching a movie or looking out a big window.

Sage and Queenie are bonded siblings rescued from the same feral cat colony back in the Fall of 2025. They are around 9 months old ( in July 2026) and have been spayed & neutered up to date on all vaccines and vet care!

Stray and feral kittens have a rough and dangerous start to their little lives. Everything around them can be a hazard and put their tiny bodies in danger- they have to be on guard and on their little toes at all times. Their poor moms do the best they can to keep them alive- they move them from place to place to avoid predators: sometimes one kitten is lost along the way; they scavenge for food: sometimes the food is spoiled, diseased or poisoned; sometimes the moms have to go really far to find food: and sometimes they don’t make it back to their babies…
…some of our rescued litters are from column a, some column b or c or many many others you don’t hear about when you only see the cute videos.

Please support the lives of these kittens during kitten season: help your local shelters or rescues and support local Trap- Neuter- Return- Monitor programs to humanely and safely control cat overpopulation.

These are just a few of the innocent and defenseless beings that have to fight to survive. Now that they are at Hobbes Haven, they never have to worry about their next meal; they will be rehabilitated until they are ready to find their furever families!

Our rescued kittens are so thankful for the gifts we received last weekend at our first fundraiser! These gifts are enjoyed by the kittens but also help fill our hearts with motivation for this labor of love, by showing us that people appreciate our work and that some community members support us. We are so grateful for your support!

Thank you for the new cats beds and cat tree Julie Hiatt Turner! Our foster kittens are warming up the beds and scratching on their new tree!

Clinic day!

Today we supported two different community members in organizing and facilitating their appointments with a local organization that offers veterinary services twice a month for large low-cost clinics focused on feral and stray cats here in the Columbia River Gorge area- we are talking about the Columbia Gorge Cat Rescue!

We are proud to collaborate with so many like-minded and kind hearted organizations and people. When you support one of us you’re supporting all of us!

Did we miss meeting you last weekend at our first fundraising event at The Dalles Farmers Market? We will be back this Saturday, June 20! Come and stop by to ask questions, learn about our mission, or ask for support- and please support our work by purchasing a 2-3 year old maple tree. All proceeds are directly applied to our mission- donations are tax deductible to our 501(c)(3) organization.
