Our final spotlight for National Vet Tech Week is LVT Dalia! Read on to learn more about her work:

Favorite animal: Pacific walrus. Whiskers, tusks, they slurp their food and have tons of personality! I just love them.

✨ What you like most about your job: I enjoy using my skills as a LVT on a wide variety of species, both at the zoo and on wildlife conservation projects around the world.

Favorite story or case: One of the most memorable success stories was a bison dystocia (difficult birth). Large animal dystocias often have a guarded prognosis for both mom and baby. We were able to immobilize her, deliver the calf, and give supportive care to both animals. The health and mammal teams hand-reared her, and we named her Stout, after Dr. Cheryl Stout who delivered her!

✨ What skills are most useful: The ability to be flexible and pivot at a moment's notice. We work around the comfort of the animals, so if that means giving a primate a hand injection while lying upside-down on a dirty floor, we will happily get it done.

📚Something most people don’t know about LVTs: LVTs run anesthesia, take radiographs, process labs, prepare for and clean up after procedures, fill prescriptions, and care for patients long before and after the veterinarian walks in.

We’re continuing our National Vet Tech Week spotlights. Next up, we’re featuring LVT Leah! Read on to learn more about her work:

🐯Favorite animal: I love any big cat!

✨ What you like most about your job: This truly is a dream job! I am so thankful I get to work with such a variety of animals and help with their conservation efforts.

✨ Favorite story or case: I enjoy cases that are a collaborative effort, especially when specialists from other institutions (like the AMC!). Memorable cases include a root canal for a lion and a prosthetic beak for a hornbill.

✨ What skills are most useful: No day is the same, no patient is the same, and plans are constantly changing.

📚Something most people don’t know about LVTs: LVTs really do it all! We’re the animal’s nurse, anesthetist, phlebotomist, and pharmacist; we also run CTs/Xrays and read lab work among other things.

This National Vet Tech Week we’re spotlighting our team over the next few days. Next up, we’re featuring LVT Priscilla! Read on to learn more about her work:

🦍Favorite animal: western lowland gorillas

✨ What you like most about your job: No two patients are ever the same. Even when I have worked with the same species a hundred times, I still learn something new, whether that be a new anesthetic consideration or patient specific personality quirk!

💉Favorite Bronx Zoo LVT story or case: Working with our white cheeked gibbon "Milton" for voluntary blood collection.

✨ What skills are most useful: Being flexible, knowing how to be kind, and maintaining a positive outlook are immensely important!

📚Something most people don’t know about LVTs: In the state of NY, LVTs must go through 2-4 years of an accredited program and pass a national board exam to become a licensed professional. The title comes with a lot of fun "hats" though, like being a phlebotomy tech, an anesthetist, a lab tech performing in-house bloodwork and f***l analysis, and a radiology tech running CT scans, just to name a few!

Happy National Vet Tech Week! This week is dedicated to celebrating the incredible veterinary technicians around the country. Here at the Bronx Zoo, our licensed vet techs (LVTs) are critical to animal care, as they are responsible for monitoring our animals’ vital signs, placing IV catheters, drawing blood, running lab tests, assisting with anesthesia, performing dental procedures, radiographs and CT-scans, and assisting our veterinarians in a wide variety of procedures. To celebrate our incredible vet techs and the work that they do, we’ll be spotlighting each of their stories over the next few days. First up, we’re featuring LVT Olivia! ✨ What you like most about your job: No two days are ever the same. Every species brings something new to learn, a different challenge to work through, and another opportunity to grow.

🦁 Favorite LVT story or case: A root canal for an African lion.

Our western tufted deer herd recently welcomed this fawn, shown alone in two of these photos and with her mother in the third photo.

Western tufted deer are small deer found only in the high-altitude forests of central China and northeastern Myanmar. They get their name from the tuft of dark hair on their forehead. The males have long, sharp, tusk-like upper canine teeth that grow downwards out of their mouths. They use these ‘tusks’ to spar with other males over territory and for mates. Our tufted deer herd can be seen from the Wild Asia Monorail until the end of October.

Happy World Migratory Bird Day! Did you know that we’re located along the Atlantic Flyway, one of four North American migratory paths? Many birds use the zoo for food, shelter, and rest as they migrate south in the fall and north in the spring. Next time you visit, see how many visiting species you can identify.
