Two roseate spoonbill chicks recently hatched in the Aquatic Bird House! These videos of the chicks were filmed by Keeper Leela at the two week and seven week mark.

Roseate spoonbills are colonial nesters, meaning they rarely nest alone. In the wild, multiple pairs commonly build stick nests in marsh or mangrove trees and shrubs. After about one month, the chicks begin stretching their wings to gain strength, and at roughly seven weeks they're generally strong enough to start flying. As they mature, the chicks’ pale plumage will turn vibrant shades of pink, their eyes will turn a deep red, and their legs will elongate. This species gets its rosy color from its diet of crustaceans, small fish, and insects.

Take a little trip to the Gelada Reserve and experience the Highlands of Ethiopia this summer. This two-acre habitat is home to geladas, Nubian ibex, and rock hyraxes. While you’re there, see if you can spot some of the rock hyrax pups and gelada youngsters that were born earlier this year.

Get to know our tigers! This is Nadia, a Malayan tiger. She was born at the Bronx Zoo in 2016. Malayan tigers are critically endangered, with only an estimated 150 remaining in the wild. They have deep orange fur with thin black stripes that are unique to each tiger. They are solitary animals, usually only coming together to mate. Nadia is a wonderful ambassador for her species. Visit her at Tiger Mountain to learn about the threats Malayan tigers face in the wild and what the Bronx Zoo and WCS are doing to help ensure their survival.

The Grevy's zebra is the largest of all zebra species, and it's easy to tell apart from its relatives once you know what to look for. Their stripes are noticeably thicker, their ears are much bigger, and unlike some other zebra species, the black and white pattern doesn't stop at the body. It covers them almost head to toe, including their mane and ears. Every zebra's stripe pattern is unique, much like human fingerprints, which helps them recognize each other in the wild.

Every year, many species of wildlife seized from smugglers by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) or other agencies arrives at the Bronx Zoo in compromised condition. They often come to us dehydrated, malnourished, injured, and sick. Our Animal Care and Zoological Health teams provide lifesaving treatment to animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.

One of the largest and fastest-growing parts of this work involves rescuing and rehabilitating North American turtle species, including Eastern box turtles, Ornate box turtles, Florida box turtles, Gulf Coast box turtles, spotted turtles, and diamondback terrapins that are being illegally exported for the overseas pet trade. Working in partnership with USFWS, the Bronx Zoo has become a critical first stop for hundreds of turtles confiscated from wildlife traffickers attempting to export them illegally through New York area airports. Since October 2024, the Bronx Zoo has helped rescue and rehabilitate more than 700 North American box turtles.

Illegal trafficking in wildlife and wildlife products is a significant threat to many species around the world and WCS is committed to supporting efforts to stem the tide. Once determined healthy, some of the turtles are transferred according to USFWS plans. Depending on the species, health status, and legal requirements, animals may be placed with accredited zoological institutions, conservation organizations, or, when appropriate and permitted, returned to protected habitat in the wild. We all can help by not purchasing wildlife and wildlife products.

On World African Painted Dog Day, learn more about one of the world’s most endangered carnivores.

These social canids are known for their large ears and unique color patterns on their coats. Like a giraffe’s unique spot pattern, or a human’s fingerprint, no two painted dogs have the same markings. Some researchers believe that the color patterns of these dogs help members of the pack recognize each other from up to 100 meters away!

African painted dog packs are led by an alpha male and alpha female with usually only the dominant pair breeding. The entire pack helps raise the young. They provide food, protection from predators, and teach them to hunt. While the rest of the pack hunts, very young pups remain behind with a designated dog to watch over them. The pack supports all its members; bringing food to sick or injured dogs until they recover.
