Got home from work to find a lovely heifer calf hanging out with cattle who were definitely not her mama. They were up near the house so I tried to sort her and send her through the closest gate, knowing that getting her by herself might panic her. Plan A didn't work, so Toss and I put her back with my cattle and took her all the way to the pond where she crossed over with her mother.

Thankfully getting the calf a little upset alerted her mother to actually pay attention and come get her, so we had very little trouble getting Plan B accomplished.

Probably going to have to string some hot wire since these ladies keep bringing their friends. That's her 2 week old calf on the other side of the fence which is why I kept trying to ease Toss up, trying not to cause her to go on the fight.

Once they were headed home though I was hoping that mean nose bite would make them think twice about coming back.

The grass is always greener...

The mama cows were back today.

Same dog, same set of cows, except for the light brown mama, she didn't get the pleasure of meeting Toss yesterday.

The true mark of how well a dog handles stock is how easy they are to handle in future encounters. Yesterday got rough in moments. Today, those moms picked up and went home pretty easily.

Had a couple of neighbor cows come visiting, they aren't worked by dogs and their babies didn't follow them over, so it was a tough task, but Toss made it look like just another day at work.

Got a little rough in parts, but that's mama cows.

Interesting enough he seemed to understand what I was asking even though our herd came up to see what the dust up was about and Toss kept his focus on the cattle who didn't belong in our pasture. If I'd had to move the entire herd and visitors to our sorting pens it would have made for a longer job in this heat.
