The 2026 GSPCA National Field Futurity took place on Sunday outside of Eureka, Kansas at the Bechtel Ranch. The ranch sits in the heart of the Flint Hills region of Kansas. The rolling hills of the Flint Hills and native prairie grass that covers the landscape provide both a beautiful and challenging place to run a bird dog. It’s a location that’s truly fitting for a national event.

I handled three pups (Karen, Miller, and Dolly) from last year’s Sitka X Bl**er litter in the futurity. I was proud of all three pups. Karen had two covey finds on quail and applied herself to the terrain very well. She didn’t run with her normal range, but I was proud of how she cut into the wind, thru grass three times as tall as she is, and sought out objectives. Miller ran a really nice race and applied himself well but unfortunately wasn’t able to pin any birds down despite two separate bird contacts. Dolly ran a very consistent, forward race, and applied herself beautifully especially for pup that’s not quite a year and a half old. About midway through her brace she went on point but I was unable to produce a bird. With about 3 minutes to spare she made a nice forward cast and we found her standing on a big covey of quail.

When placements were announced Dolly was awarded second place! I couldn’t be more thrilled for Dolly and her owner, Mark Morten! I’m so excited for the future of all these pups!

A huge thank you goes out to the judges, Sherrie Moseley and Phil Mathiowetz, for sitting in the saddle and watching our dogs work! I’d also like to thank Brian Murphey, David O’Brien, Robbi Gulledge, and anyone else I’m missing for your efforts in making the futurity run smoothly. A big thank you goes out to Brandon Blum for scouting. I also need to thank Mark Morten and Tom and Stephanie Hardage for trusting me with their pups. Lastly, thanks to Chasyn Vogan for keeping things rolling at the kennel while I’m gone!

There are individual dogs that take a person on a ride you’ll never forget. Their talent, trainability, and biddability set them apart. You set goals and they accomplish them with ease. They make the nearly impossible goals seem well within reach. They are the type of dog a person can make mistakes with yet they still find a way to carry you. They are different. They are special. And, they most certainly don’t come around very often.

I’ve been fortunate enough to own a couple of those dogs. I have a feeling the two in this picture are going to be those type of dogs as well. Dolly and Miller are out of last year’s Sitka X Bl**er breeding. I don’t own either of these young dogs, but I’m fortunate they are in wonderful hands and I‘ll have plenty of opportunities to have my hands on them throughout their lifetime.

This past Saturday at the SGSPC horseback field trial, Tom Hardage, Miller’s owner, handled the pups in Amateur Derby. Miller came away with the win and Dolly brought home second. Later on that day, I had the opportunity to handle Dolly and Miller. Dolly got revenge by winning Open Derby and Miller took home second. Dolly is owned by Mark Morten. I couldn’t be more excited to watch these pups develop. They have a very bright future ahead! The rest of the litter is extremely talented as well. I have no doubt I’ll get to make success posts about them soon also!

This weekend I traveled to Howard, KS to compete in the Sunflower GSP Club’s fall horseback trial. The weather was hotter than you’d like for a fall field trial and the course was very overgrown which made for challenging conditions for all the dogs. Fenix laid down an impressive run in OGD(R) in the challenging conditions. It was a competitive stake against some really quality dogs and in the end the judges determined Fenix to be the winner! I couldn’t be more pleased with Fenix and how she continues to develop despite not getting the attention she deserved as a young pup due to family health issues. Fenix’s win finishes her Field Champion title pending AKC approval! She is now FC Hunt’em Up’s Rise From The Ashes MH NA-1.

I’d like to thank Nicole and Kevin Donohue for spearheading this event and all of the other SGSPC volunteers for your time and efforts. The selfless service of the event secretary, bird planters, gunners, judges, and landowners make these events happen and I can’t thank all of you enough. I’d also like to thank Chasyn Vogan for taking care of everything back home while I was gone. I appreciate it!

I’ve spent the last two weekends at hunt tests running dogs for clients. Each dog went 5 for 6 on their pass to attempt ratio. This past weekend was a double double (4 tests - 2 tests each day) and they all went 4 for 4! Not exactly an easy feat. I’m proud of these three dogs, all the work that went into preparing and developing them, and of all the folks that had a hand in their success.

Tessa, a Mason X Pearl pup, is one pass away from finishing her Master Hunter title. Tessa has been an absolute pleasure to work with. I’d llike to thank Barry Bollinger for his work breaking Tessa as a young dog. Despite over a year off in between training and test prep Tessa didn’t forget a thing. That’s a testament to her intelligence and Barry’s quality work! Tessa is owned by Rusty Yost and Brittany Jones.

Rip finished his Senior Hunter title this weekend! Rip flew thru his testing for SH and we have plans to finish his MH title also. He is owned by Bob Ross with Settles Ford GSP Kennels. I’d like to thank Bob for the opportunity to develop Rip from the very beginning and his commitment to seeing Rip develop to his full potential!

Woodrow also finished his Senior Hunter title this last weekend. I met Woodrow’s owner several years ago on an upland bird hunt I was guiding. He fell in love with bird hunting and the dogs that make it an even more special experience. He didn’t set out to title his dog, but wanted a well trained dog for his boys to hunt over. Now you have both my friend! Woodrow is owned by Kyle Keeling. Thanks for trusting us to bring Woodrow’s full potential to the surface!

A little over two years ago I about lost Boss. A foreign body had punctured his liver and he was on the verge of turning septic by the time I noticed anything significantly wrong with him. Thankfully the Animal Health Center at KSU successfully diagnosed his injury and preformed the necessary surgery. He was active, healthy, and happy after the surgery, but just didn’t seem to have the same motor he had prior to surgery. This spring I noticed a change in him. I felt like he finally was getting his legs and motor back that I’d seen prior to surgery. Since field trial season has began this fall, I can confidently say the Boss of old is back!

This past weekend Boss won a 4 point major in Open Gun Dog at the GSP Club of Nebraska’s fall horseback trial! He couldn’t have drawn a worse time of day to run but he put on a show despite hot, humid conditions. I couldn’t be happier that he’s back to full strength and look forward to experiencing the rest of the fall field trial and hunting season with him!

There’s a little more grey on her face than her first hunt 13 years ago and her body might not allow her to complete her job with quite the speed and vigor it once did, but her heart and mind still work just like they always have. The sparkle in her eyes leave no doubt she’s happiest getting to do the things she was born to do. Blessed to get another season with you Pearl.

This past weekend we kicked off the fall field trial season traveling to the GSPC of Nebraska fall horseback trial. Despite absolutely miserable hot and humid conditions the trial was a success.

Boss placed 2nd in OLGD. His brace was a blast to be a part of as both dogs put on a show in the hot afternoon heat. Boss’s performance was probably the best I’ve ever seen him perform. His race, application, and bird work was spectacular. On most days a performance of that caliber wins, but I’ll tip my cap to his bracemate who had just a little bit better performance. The separating factor being a very nice limb find which earned her the win.

In OGD(R), I handled Sawney for Laura Miller. His performance was very much that of a veteran bird dog. He wasn’t over the top flashy or fast but he showed the caliber of bird dog he truly is. I’ve said for a while now he’s one of the best Vizsla’s I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with and he proved just that. He earned a 3rd place finish and completed his callback for a retrieve very nicely. Fenix put down a solid performance as well and earned a 4th place finish. For a while, I thought she might go birdless as scenting conditions were terrible when she ran, but Fenix dug out a nice find towards the end of her brace to put her in the placements. She completed her callback for a retrieve in quick fashion just like she always does.

I can’t thank Ryan Griess, the judges, and all of the volunteers enough for their hard work putting on the event. To the judges, thank you for sitting thru some miserable weather to watch our dogs work. It’s much appreciated! Ryan, thanks again for everything you do to put on a really nice event. The food was excellent!

Since starting this business in 2011, I've been blessed with meeting some of the absolute best people from all over the country and even other countries. Folks that started as clients and became wonderful friends. Last week I received this awesome custom made belt buckle from Carl and Stephanie Correra as a token of appreciation for all of the hard work and time spent training them and their dog Shelby. What an amazing and thoughtful gesture! I'm blessed to be able to provide a service to so many wonderful people!

Shelby spent a little over a year with us before she went home last fall. While she was here we fixed several bad habits that were developed due to a lack of foundational training and worked on turning a black heart soft again. When she arrived she was a extremely talented dog with no real direction. She wanted to do things her way. We fixed those issues and got her to buy into working as a team. She learned doing things our way made her life more enjoyable and a bond was built. She could trust us and we could trust her. She finished her AKC MH title and came within one retrieving credit of finishing her AKC FC title while she was here.

To be completely honest, I was worried she’d revert back to her old ways when she went home but both of her owners have done a wonderful job of continuing to work with her. They listened to our advice and some pretty harsh constructive criticism. Something that’s not easy to do but I’m proud of them for doing it! As a result, they have grown immensely themselves and are getting to enjoy the fruits of their commitment to Shelby!

I couldn’t be more excited to announce, pending AKC approval, Shelby finished her AKC Field Champion title over the weekend! She placed second in a three point major OLGD retrieving stake giving her that final retrieve credit! I’m so happy for Carl and Stephanie and proud of their commitment to giving Shelby the structure she needed to succeed. Keep up the good work my friends and enjoy that dog of yours! Strive for excellence because you have a dog capable of anything you try to challenge her with! She’s one of the rare truly special ones! FC Hunt’em Up’s Bullit GT MH has a nice ring to it!

A little fun fact, Shelby makes the 7th FC from the two Mason X Pearl breedings. Pearl produced 11 puppies from different litters who have went on to finish upper level AKC and NAVHDA titles. To date those 11 pups have earned 10 MH’s, 3 MH12’s, 3 MHA’s, 7 FC’s, 1 GFC, 2 AFC’s, 1 RFC, 2 NWGDC’s, 1 NWGDC 2nd place finisher, 1 NWGDC 3rd place finisher, 3 NWGDC JAM’s, 4 NAVHDA UT Prize 1’s, 1 NAVHDA UT Prize 2, and 2 NAVHDA VC’s.
