Not All Dogs Are Created Equal — So Why Train Them Like They Are? Every dog is different. Some are bold, dominant, sensitive, high-energy, aggressive, nervous, insecure, scattered, or easily distracted. A good trainer understands that these unique traits require tailored approaches—because a one-size-fits-all method simply doesn’t work for all dogs or breeds. To train effectively, a trainer must h

ave real-world experience with a wide range of canine temperaments. Over time, if you’re committed to this craft, you’ll work with dogs that fall into every category. And when that happens, relying on a cookie-cutter training style won’t get you far. Take the sensitive dog, for example. Applying pressure or being heavy-handed when they’re not responding can backfire badly. Instead of learning, the dog may shut down emotionally—and in some cases, they may never fully recover. Patience is the key. I always tell my clients: “Slower is faster in training.” When you take your time, pay close attention to body language, and truly listen to what the dog is telling you, you’ll become a better, more effective trainer. Unfortunately, some trainers only know how to train one way, or only work with one specific breed. But if you’re serious about training dogs—especially hunting breeds—you need broad, hands-on experience across many types of dogs and temperaments. There are many methods to “skin the cat,” but the best trainers are those who have worked with a diverse group of dogs and adapted their techniques accordingly. Working with a trainer is a relationship. If you’re serious about training your dog, expect to spend real time with that trainer—sometimes even years, depending on your goals and your commitment. So here’s my advice to dog owners: learn to read your dog. Learn to train your dog. It’s not as hard as it seems—if you slow down, focus on the details, and make it a fun experience for both you and your dog. Training is a journey.

Here is Scout today during her first experience having birds shot over her. Mark has done an outstanding job with her, which is exactly why she’s progressing so nicely. She showed great promise and handled the session extremely well. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this little girl develops. Needless to say, she was one tired pup after today’s work.

Stopped by to see Sarah at Woodsong Springer Spaniels today and introduce a couple of her young pups to birds for the very first time. The goal was simple, build excitement, confidence, and a love for what will hopefully become many great days in the uplands ahead.

These are some very sharp-looking pups, and judging by today, they certainly enjoyed themselves. Plenty of enthusiasm, plenty of curiosity, and after all the excitement, they completely crashed out asleep on the lawn.

Do these two have a future in the uplands? I sure hope so. The early signs are looking pretty good.

Stepping back a little from the typical gun dog posts today.
I hope all our veterans out there are able to find at least a little peace and enjoyment this Memorial Day weekend.
Days like this can be especially difficult for those who have served, as memories tend to weigh a little heavier.

Just wanted you to know you’re being thought about on this holiday weekend. SEMPER FI

Jorge and his extremely nice GSP, Tucker, were here today to begin their steady to wing and shot training sessions.

To be honest, because Jorge has already done one heck of a job (all the necessary work) with Tucker, this next step should come very easy for him. A strong foundation makes all the difference, and it definitely shows with this dog.

This is Holly — not a recent picture, but we had her here today for a training session. Holly tends to work a little too close for her owner, John. Being an English Cocker, working close is naturally part of the breed, but Holly was also hesitant to really get into cover and preferred to stay nearby.

Today we worked through a few techniques to help her better understand what we are asking of her in the field. What really helps Holly is her high drive and enthusiasm to work. She responded nicely and showed good progress throughout the session. With consistency and exposure, she’s only going to continue improving.

I just love this little girl!

Kevin had his dog Shaky here along with his son Zack for their remote collar session today. Shaky did pretty good because Kevin put down a good foundation with him. Better the foundation, the transfer to the collar is much easier for the dog. Nice work Kevin!!

Nick had Cider here this afternoon, where we began introducing steady to flush, shot, and drop.

This little guy is extremely intelligent and an absolute pleasure to work with. What stands out most is his intensity and desire in the field, qualities that are going to serve him very well as his training progresses.

Tony had Remi here this morning, and we worked through all of his foundation drills. He still has some development ahead before we transition to the remote training collar.

Once we brought the birds out, it was time to hang on! Remi gave us a glimpse of what may be some very stylish points down the road. He’s displaying the natural ability and attitude we like to see at this stage of training.

As always, slow and steady progression produces the best results, and Remi is going to develop into a very nice dog.
