Established in 2015, GTBF provides much needed medical care to pets in the animal shelters of Temple and Belton, Texas.

This helps shelter pets receive wound care, spay/neuter, and medication to improve their health and help them become more adoptable.

Well, nobody answered my poll question last week 🫤, so I'm going to try again. Who LOVES older pets? I'll go first: ME! I've owned and fostered many older pets and, in my experience, they are soooo easy to love and care for. What you see is what you get, and often little or no training is required.

In this week's list we have Bullet, a 10 year old love bug and he looks just as spunky as Mystery who is only a few months old. So I'd like for you to consider the older pets, the one-eyed pets, the black ones, and the other ones that just get overlooked when they are actually really awesome. Go take a look, and be sure to give the 'misfits' a chance too.

Today we're going to take a poll. Without naming a breed or type (such as dog, cat, etc.) tell us in the comments what you consider the perfect pet. Size, energy, age, color - tell us what your dream pet would be like. I'll go first: middle aged (5 years or older), 30-40 pounds, calm and cuddly, playful, black or dark, and smart (hmmm, sounds like I just described Gracie). We're heading into the hot summer months here in Central Texas, and what better way to have fun in the sun than with a cuddly buddy by our side! Of course we have to use caution and make sure our furry friends are safe in the summer heat - walks in the cooler hours of morning and evening, plenty of shade, air conditioning for us and our pets, and lots of water for everyone.

We'd like to remind you of who we are. We are NOT a shelter or rescue. The Greater Temple-Belton Foundation supplements and helps fund the Temple Animal Shelter’s pet adoption, spay/neuter, and educational programs. It also provides support to the Bell County Animal Shelter.

In past years, the foundation has purchased surgical lights and other equipment for the Temple Animal Shelter’s surgical room. The foundation also pays for surgical medications and supplies, and funds out-of-pocket expenses for part-time, volunteer, or retired veterinarians who do surgeries at the shelter’s operating room.

Often, when funds are otherwise unavailable to enhance the Temple Animal Shelter to better serve animals and get them ready for adoption to good homes, our foundation will step in and help pay for equipment, shelter improvements, or other services (such as medical care of animals) to help provide outstanding animal care!

Just a reminder, don't overlook the older pets, or the ones that don't look 'normal' (missing an eye or a leg, unusual mixes, or just different). These special pets are just as deserving as that adorable puppy or kitten and can be the perfect match for the family that just gives them a chance. I've found that these unique pets are often so much more than you would expect and just so full of love and gratitude. A few of them are on today's list - check them out and just try to prove me wrong, instead you'll probably find pure perfection!
