š¾ Deaf Dog Awareness Week: Meet Nevaeh! (Nev-aye-uh) One of our adorable Cobblestone patients. š š¾
We asked Nevaehās family to tell us about their very special girl. This is her story:
āNevaeh and her brother were surrendered to AAWL in Phx. They were the only two puppies from their litter who survived, and both were deaf. When they arrived, they were very sick, tiny, and fragile.
After recently losing one of our dogs, I saw Nevaeh on the rescueās website and immediately thought, āWe need to go see her.ā We were the first people to meet her, and as soon as they brought her out, she came alive! She was tiny and fragile, but her personality was huge. Within 30 min, we had completely fallen in love and took her home that same day.
Once home, we discovered so many little signs that she was meant to be ours. Her birthday is the same as mine, she entered the shelter on the exact day our other dog passed away, and her birthday is also the same as our soul dogās, who passed away three years earlier. ā¤ļø
Her Gotcha Day is September 28th, and this year marks one year with Nevaeh!
We donāt do a lot differently for her. We treat her like a normal dog, because thatās exactly what she is. She uses a bell to tell us when she needs to go outside and has learned basic sign language like āsit,ā ācome here,ā and ākisses.ā She also understands our movements, expressions, and body language.
Her five canine siblings have helped her learn, too. She relies on her other senses, especially vibration, to stay aware of whatās happening around her.
Donāt let the word ādeafā make you think a dog is limited. Nevaeh doesnāt know sheās different. She plays, gets into trouble, gets excited for treats, loves her people, and lives her life just like any other dog.
Her familyās advice for anyone considering a deaf pet? āDo it! Donāt overlook the dog who canāt hear. They may just be the one who changes your life!ā ā¤ļøš¾
