Gracie joined me for a solo outing today so I could assess her in a new environment, away from her family and familiar routines.

With no expectations—just observation—we spent time exploring, bird watching, playing tug and flirt pole, greeting dogs through the dog park fence, taking photos, and testing a few recalls to gauge her responses. Along the way, I learned some valuable things about Gracie, including that new experiences can make her a little hesitant, like getting in and out of my car for the first time.

Assessment days like these help me learn who a dog truly is outside the home so I can build the best training plan possible. Gracie and I both had a great time today! 🐾❤️

Who is this handsome guy you may ask? Meet Zulu. At 2 years old, his owner has been managing his leash reactivity since he was about 6 months old. Not knowing how to address it has been a struggle and finally she decided to get some after she got pulled down when Zulu chased after a lizard. Moving from a house to an apartment restricted how Zulu releases his pent-up energy and she knows that walks,structure and freedom are very important but challenging. We focused on finding the right collar and leash combination for them, discussed pressure and release. Zulu currently pulls like a freight train and tunes his mom out. Fortunately, Zulu loves gameplay. Motivation through play is far more valuable to him than food or treats.Zulu already has a solid training foundation. His owner is simply looking to fill in the gaps where she has been struggling. The breakthrough moment of our session was discussing fulfillment. Instead of squashing his prey drive, we are channeling it to reward Zulu when he makes better decisions. I look forward to working with this team. Feeling grateful to have met sweet Gracie tonight and to work with her family. We discussed a training plan to address a few typical teenage dog behaviors in the home while also helping her grow in confidence.
She’s got an aversion about things going over her head, and that heavy doggy door is definitely not her favorite right now—but we’re already finding wins. She had a great time playing tug which is a great outlet ,relationship builder,fulfillment of prey drive which is a valuable reward and we’ll build on that by introducing the flirt pole to channel her energy and use it as a fun training reward.
