It’s National Black Dog Day! Meet our cover girl, Ludavene, a Bouvier des Flandres—with a little help from her goat friend!

You may have heard that black dogs have a harder time finding homes. The research tells a more complicated story: a study of 7,440 shelter dogs in Louisville found lower adoption odds for entirely black dogs after accounting for other factors.
What matters today? Giving these beautiful dogs a chance to be seen, met, and loved.

Considering adoption? Meet the black dogs at your local shelter, ask about their personalities, and find the companion who fits your family. Already have a black-coated baby running your house? Show us in the comments!

Different Breeds. Different Coats. Important Lessons.

You can’t learn every grooming skill on one type of dog! At American Grooming Academy, working with different breeds is an essential part of our students’ education.

A Cocker Spaniel’s coat requires different techniques than a Poodle’s curls or a Schnauzer’s breed pattern. These dogs give students hands-on experience with coat preparation, clipping, sc******ng, and the details that make each breed’s trim unique.

Just as important, students learn to adjust the groom for the individual dog—considering coat condition, age, comfort, and the family’s maintenance routine. Knowing a breed’s pattern matters. Knowing how to adapt it matters, too.

Your dog can help teach the next generation of groomers! Under instructor supervision, every breed-specific appointment helps our students build the skills and confidence they’ll need in a professional salon.

Have a breed you think could help our students learn? Call or text AGA Temecula to ask about our breed-specific grooming opportunities!

🐾 CALLING ALL COCKER SPANIELS! 🐾

American Grooming Academy students need Cocker Spaniels to complete their hands-on, breed-specific grooming requirements!

Approved Cocker Spaniels will receive 50% OFF their qualifying student groom. Select dogs needed for technical evaluations may even qualify for a complimentary groom.

Participation is by approval only. Dogs must have the coat needed for the assigned technique and be safe for student handling. Appointments may take longer, but every groom is supervised and checked by a certified instructor.

🐶 When should a puppy receive their first professional groom?

Most puppies can begin introductory grooming around 10–12 weeks old, after their first round of vaccinations and once their veterinarian confirms they are ready.

Early grooming isn’t just about getting your puppy clean. It helps them become comfortable with bathing, dryers, nail trimming, clippers and being handled by a professional groomer. Short, positive visits can build confidence and establish healthy grooming habits that last a lifetime.

In her latest article, Linda Healy explains when to begin, what that first appointment should include, and what pet parents can practice at home.

🐾 CALLING ALL BREED-SPECIFIC DOGS! 🐾

Our students at American Grooming Academy need real dogs to practice and complete their breed-specific grooming requirements.

We are currently looking for breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, Schnauzers, Setters, Westies and more!

Every appointment is performed by an AGA student under the supervision of an experienced instructor. Your dog receives patient, carefully supervised grooming while helping a future professional pet groomer build valuable hands-on skills.

Have one of these breeds—or know someone who does? Drop the breed in the comments, tag their pet parent or send us a message!
