Your equine veterinarian shows up in the pouring rain, in the freezing cold, on the worst days — and the best ones, too. Now's your chance to say thank you, publicly!

Starting July 1, share a video (up to 1 min) telling us how your equine veterinarian goes above and beyond. DM it to us on Facebook or Instagram by July 31.

✅ Each horse owner who submits a video will receive a digital $10 Starbucks gift card. There is no limit to the number of videos you can submit, but only one gift card will be allowed per person.

With the recent cases of NWS, here is a little bit of information on what to look for and what it is. There have been no reported cases in CA as of right now, and we will do our best to give you updates as information gets released.

In response to the recent confirmation from the USDA of the presence of New World Screwworm in the United States, the AAEP has published New World Screwworm Infestation (Disease) Guidelines.

Several pesticides are currently registered by the Environmental Protection Agency for use against screwworm. Examples of approved equine-labeled products and their active ingredient include the following listed on the graphic. An example of an approved product for the outside surfaces of buildings and perimeter treatment is EP152 EW Insecticide (Environmental Science US LLC) with active ingredient Zeta-Cypermethrin. Additionally, DeltaGard Fly Insecticide products (Environmental Science US LLC) with active ingredient Deltamethrin is approved for this use.

Dr. Katie Flynn, Senior Staff Veterinarian for Equine Health and Biosecurity at USEF, will be joined by Dr. Neil Gray, sport horse practitioner in California.

With summer comes hotter weather and more sun exposure, so we want to make sure your equine friends are properly prepared and protected☀️

High UV exposure can lead to sunburn, particularly around the eyes and nose, and any pink skinned areas on the body. Many of us love lots of white on our horses, but make sure to protect those areas when it comes to sun damage. Long term exposure without protection can lead to an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma.

We highly recommend using protective gear like fly mask and sheets, particularly products that have UVA/UVB protection. If possible, prioritize fly masks that cover the ears and nose as well, especially if you have a horse with any pink skin their face.

There are also many options for horse specific sunscreens for the smaller, more sensitive areas of pink skin like the nose or other areas of the body (avoid the eyes). These can be bought through your vet or other online sources, however make sure to consult your vet so that they may point you in the right direction.
