We Closed Intake That Day… But Then Came a Mama and Her Four Babies Who Needed Us. ❤️🐾
On the very day we officially closed intake, we received a call about a young mama cat and her kittens living in a lean-to attached to the back of a house.
Mama had somehow managed to squeeze underneath a door with barely any clearance to get into the shed. Her kittens were found on a shelf, and we suspect mama may have moved them there after they were born.
The woman who called for help managed to get the kittens safely into a small dog crate. Mama eventually followed, although not before attempting to steal one of her babies back! 😂
After we shared their story, a foster application came in. When I tell you how grateful I was, I truly mean it.🙏
We had just closed intake, and with our resources already stretched thin, this was a much-needed bit of hope.
After approving this amazing new foster and connecting with the caregiver to form a plan, I headed to Ambler for transport.
We covered mama, got everyone settled in the car, and headed out. She did great initially, but the stress eventually caught up with her, and we had to pull over and separate her from the kittens briefly to help her settle.
That's when we discovered just how special this little girl is!
I honestly thought I was looking at a teenager when I first saw her. She's probably no more than eight months old herself! Despite her young age, she's already raising four babies.
Once she settled, we quickly discovered that she's incredibly friendly and trusting. I was able to hold her, and she willingly sat on my lap. She was gentle and even allowed us to examine all four of her babies without a fuss.
We have four precious kittens, two boys and two girls. All four had a significant number of fleas, so mama received treatment and Capstar, while the babies got some much-needed flea baths.
This little family went from living in a shed to having a safe place to land and a chance at a completely different life.
We don't close intake because we don't want to help. We close it because we simply cannot take in more animals without the resources and safe places they need. Having a foster step up made it possible for us to say yes when we otherwise couldn't.
We're incredibly grateful to the person who opened their home to this little family. One young mama and her four babies now have the chance at the safe, happy lives they deserve.
Sometimes, one foster application really does make all the difference. ❤️💜🐾
