🐾 LET ME REMIND YOU ONCE AGAIN… IT. IS. INSTINCT.
Corgis were not originally bred to be adorable little fuzzy loaves decorating your couch.
They were bred to HERD LIVESTOCK. 🐄
That means they were purposely bred to use their voice, movement, and yes — their TEETH to move animals much, much larger than themselves.
So when your adorable 10-pound potato starts barking orders, chasing ankles and nipping at your heels like you're a cow that missed the memo…
Congratulations. 🎉
Your corgi is corgi-ing.
Nipping and barking are NORMAL instincts for this breed. That doesn't mean we simply allow them to turn the household into their own personal cattle operation. 😂
So what do you do when you thought you were bringing home a cute, cuddly loaf of bread and discovered you actually purchased a tiny raptor with midget legs?
TRAINING.
And training isn't something you do for six weeks and declare finished. It's a never-ending part of owning a dog — especially an intelligent, busy herding breed.
When they nip, redirect them.
Put a toy in their mouth instead of letting your hand become the toy.
Give them appropriate things to chew — chews, bones and toys.
Give that brain something to DO. Puzzle toys, training sessions, games and learning new commands are just as important as physical exercise.
Give them appropriate outlets for that energy. Play. Run. Explore. Chase a ball. Learn something new.
And most importantly, be consistent.
You aren't trying to remove the instinct that generations of breeding purposely put into them. You're teaching them when, where and how that instinct is appropriate.
A Pembroke Welsh Corgi may look like a fluffy loaf of bread with legs…
But underneath all that cute is a smart, bossy little cattle dog whose ancestors made a living running underneath livestock and telling animals 50 times their size where to go.
Know the breed you bring home.
Respect what they were bred to do.
Then train them how to live successfully in your world.
Because the loaf is only an illusion.
The raptor is real. 😂🐾🐄
