Sometimes training solves a problem super fast! Other times it takes time. It depends on so many factors. For Becks- training him to come over and hold still was easy.

Here are the 2 skills that we focused on:

1. When a leash and collar are presented you will be rewarded for approaching. I use a fun game for this where the dog runs to the collar- reward- and then we send them away and then repeat a few times.

2. We taught him to lay down and be still.

Then when he was ready we added the steps together!

Now his mom does not need to chase him down to clip his collar and leash on!

What I look for when dogs are on opposite sides of the gate:
✅ calm/neutral behavior
✅playful behavior

What I don’t want to see:
❌lots of barking/growling
❌over the top excitement/jumping/whining

During play I look for:
✅Taking breaks
✅Responding to another dog’s social cues
✅Back and forth type play
✅ Spending some time doing something other than play like digging or sniffing

What I don’t want to see:
❌Persistent behaviors after a dog asks for space
❌One sided play- one dog trying to get away and the other does not stop

Many dogs benefit from slow introductions in the home whether they tend to be fearful, nervous, territorial, or over-excited. Making the introduction calm and taking slower steps can set relationships up for success and help your dog to feel like you’ve got their back.

This is just how I do this in my own home. There are other ways that may work well for you and your dogs. My own dogs truly need this protocol and benefit so much from it.

Honoring the brave, the loyal, and the four-legged. 🇺🇸🐾

Today, we remember the incredible sacrifices of our nation’s Military Working Dogs and their handlers. Their life-saving work is a beautiful reminder of what dogs and humans can achieve when they work together as a team, rooted in absolute trust and mutual respect.

Thank you to all of our human & canine heroes who have served. We will never forget you. ❤️

I have done so much work to make sure that my dogs are calm about new dogs being in my home. I aim for calm greetings and neutrality as much as possible. My oldest dog was once quite territorial and my Pittie mix has a history of fear based reactivity after being attacked once in our neighborhood by an off leash dog- but honestly everyone has learned so much and come so far.

Let me know in the comments if you want to see step by step what I do to set everyone up for success! ⬇️
