Giving your dog off leash time in nature is a wonderful and enriching experience for them! There are safe ways to offer that. But if for whatever reason you cannot provide off leash time- giving your dog more freedom and choice in life can do so much to improve your dog’s welfare too!
These are just a few ways that you can do that for your dog. When dogs have better welfare, living with them becomes easy ❤️

If your dog is not a service dog who is trained to perform a task that they are doing reliably off leash, they should be leashed in busy public settings. If you are not competing at a dog sporting event, you should leash your dog. If you didn’t arrange a Sniffspot or otherwise arrange a safe open space for your dog to run, you should leash your dog.

I have personally had my dogs charged by both friendly and unfriendly dogs in store parking lots and in my neighborhood. As a former Petsmart employee, I witnessed dogs run through the front doors of the store (which open automatically) into the parking lot. ALL of these dogs were “e collar trained”. Sometimes off leash dogs are not trained at all. This post is not really about training but about safety. Please make safer choices for the public and for your own dog! Leash up in busy public places! 😊

Does your dog enjoy playing with the other dogs in your house? If so, that is great news!
It DOES make meeting your dog’s needs for play so much easier!

However, it is incredibly beneficial to meet your dogs needs in OTHER ways aside from just playing with dogs. Most dogs have a desire for other types of enrichment as well as a sense of purpose in life.

When I work with cases where there is intra-household conflict there are usually a few common themes- dogs who never get alone time/cannot cope with alone time, dogs who don’t understand the boundaries of their housemates, or dogs whose needs are not being met in other ways, engaging in too much high arousal play. Other times, I meet dogs who are genuinely dog aggressive or avoidant which can come from genetic factors. In some cases existing separately is the safest option which can look different depending on each case.

Client dog, Ash has been working with Adara combining one on one sessions in home with a board and train stay!

A board and train program can be really beneficial, as it helps us get to know your dog and accelerate their learning! However the most important thing is that families can incorporate the same skills themselves so that their dog can be successful! That is why we like to follow up and work with each family in their home before and after a board and train program!

Does your dog panic when you need to leave them alone? Here are a few things that WILL NOT solve it:
❌Corrections for barking/whining
❌Forcing crate time
❌Letting them figure it out on their own

What works:
✅A good desensitization plan
✅A good management plan
✅Helping them gradually learn that you will return soon so that they can feel more comfortable being alone
✅Meeting social, environmental, and enrichment needs of the dog

It is normal and healthy for dogs to express a range of emotions in day to day life!
They might feel:
✅Excited
✅Relaxed
✅Nervous
✅Conflicted
✅Anxious
✅Sleepy
✅Overwhelmed
✅Playful
✅And many things at once!

You can help your dog learn to move through feelings, recover and build resilience! There should not be an absence of feeling things but an ability to cope and regulate.

Does your dog know how to relax and calm themself down without an obedience command? Do they pop up out of a down/stay after 3 seconds?

Transitions to new environments can be a challenge for many dogs!

While sniffing can be calming and decompressing, it definitely was not helping Indy calm down when we got to new places when she was younger. Continuing to move around would result in frantic behavior and less engagement. Stopping and standing still to wait for a check in also caused Indy a lot of frustration!

What helped the most was ⭐️pattern games⭐️

Thanks to Kim Palermo for her awesome pattern games class, we have been making so much progress!
