We have been getting lots of calls about fleas!!!
We will not take dogs with an active flea infestation unless steps have been taken to start killing the fleas. We recommend starting with Capstar, as it kills adult fleas. The main thing is to treat your home environment. This can include your vehicle, if your dog rides with you! Virbec knockout is the best product for this as it's a spray. After the capstar, they need to be on a preventative! Oral preventative, purchased from the vet is the best option. Sometimes fleas become immune to the topical treatment. Cheap flea collars generally do not work, although natural flea collars are a good alternative to medication, they will not stop an infestation!
Using natural collars can be used in addition to other flea and tick medications, but not as a stand alone treatment, if you have an infestation.
Be careful when buying over the counter medicated flea shampoos, they are not to be used around the same time topicals are applied. Some brands have been known to cause overdoses and deaths in pets, so do your research.
If you have any other questions about fleas and treating your home, feel free to ask! We want to help everyone keep their pets happy, healthy, and bug free!
