One of the permaculture techniques I'm trying this year is compost pathways between hugels. I've layered paths lasagna-style with cardboard, sawdust, and leaves onto which I'm going to layer grass clippings, comfry leaves, etc--layering greens and browns to compost down beneath my feet, right where I want to use it.

If you plant fruit trees, know that grass is a greedy bastard and you need to mulch for 3 ft in every direction around your fruit tree or that grass will take so much water and nutrients, it will cut your fruit tree's growth by a third.

Once established it's not as important.

If rats are eating your plants, owl boxes are a good solution.
And the residents are very cute.
