Your dog isn't barking to annoy you. He's trying to tell you something. π
Is your dog the neighborhood alarm system? π
Barking is how dogs talk β but when it's nonstop, everybody's miserable. Here's what most people get wrong: yelling "quiet!" just sounds like you're barking along with them.
Here's what actually helps:
π Figure out the why first. Alert barking, boredom barking, and anxious barking all need different fixes.
π Teach "quiet" by rewarding silence. Mark and treat the moment they stop β even two seconds of quiet counts at first.
π§ Tire the brain. A bored dog barks. Puzzle toys, sniff walks, and training games burn the energy behind the barking.
πͺ Manage the triggers. Window film for the mailman-watcher, white noise for the every-sound barker.
And never punish the bark β a punished dog isn't calmer, just more stressed. And stress barks more.
A quiet house is a happy house. π
