It is Train Your Dog Month!!
Wet Nose University will be sharing training tips all month to help you train your pup!. So stay tuned! Today: POTTY TRAINING It is important to put your puppy on a schedule for food, water, play, training and sleep. Puppies usually go potty after each meal and after any change in activity. The schedule will help you predict potty breaks. In addition to this, the maximum amount of time that a puppy can hold it increases with age: 2months = 2hrs. 3months = 3hrs. 4months = 4hrs 5months = 5hrs This is the maximum if you absolutely have to, but it is best to take the puppy out as often as possible so she/he gets used to eliminating outside. The preference is to take the puppy outside to a yard or grassy area and give your puppy a treat and lots of praise when he eliminates outside. Use p*e pads only in extreme cases (hi rise buildings for example). A lot of dogs start to mistake rugs for p*e pads, and this slows down the potty training process. And finally a note on water: puppies are likely to drink water because they are thirsty, but also because they are bored, or as a game. On average a dog will need 1 to 1.5 oz of water per pound of weight per day. Measure the water in a container and dispense from it. Give plenty of water with each meal, mid-morning, mid-afternoon, after play. Last sip of water 2 hours before bed-time. Happy Training!
