Did you know cats can spend a significant part of their waking hours grooming themselves?

Grooming helps keep their coat clean, regulate body temperature, and can even be a way for cats to relax.

Basically, your cat has a very serious self-care routine.

At LIV Cares Kitty Cat Care, we understand that cats have their own personalities, habits, and routines, and we’re happy to follow their rules!

🏡 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 “𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐋” 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋 𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐃𝐎𝐆

We walk into our homes every day without thinking twice about them.

✿The click of the front door.
✿The hum of the fridge.
✿The washing machine spinning.
✿The neighbour shutting their car door.
✿The blinds moving in the breeze.
✿The slippery kitchen floor.

Normal. Normal. Normal.

🤔Except… normal is something we learn.

➡️And to a dog who has just arrived in your home, many of the completely ordinary things you barely notice may be new, unfamiliar, unpredictable … and sometimes scary.

💁Think about just how much there is for a new dog to process.

🐾 The door handle suddenly moving
🐾 The front door opening and closing
🐾 A doorbell or someone knocking
🐾 The washing machine changing cycles
🐾 The dishwasher humming
🐾 The vacuum cleaner appearing
🐾 Heating or air conditioning switching on
🐾 Pipes making noises
🐾 Floorboards creaking
🐾 Footsteps upstairs
🐾 People moving around in another room
🐾 Curtains or blinds moving
🐾 Reflections in windows and mirrors
🐾 Shadows changing as the sun moves
🐾 Television sounds
🐾 Phones ringing
🐾 Kitchen appliances beeping
🐾 Slippery wood or tiled floors
🐾 Different textures under their paws
🐾 Stairs
🐾 Narrow hallways
🐾 Doorways
🐾 Baby gates and barriers
🐾 Fences and gates moving or rattling
🐾 Cars arriving on the driveway
🐾 People walking past the house
🐾 Children playing outside
🐾 Neighbours coming and going
🐾 Dogs barking next door
🐾 Wildlife in the garden
🐾 Trees and plants moving in the wind
🐾 Completely unfamiliar smells
🐾 The scent of animals who live there, or lived there before
🐾 New people moving unpredictably around them.

We filter most of this out.

🧠Our brains have experienced these things thousands of times and learned that they are irrelevant.

😶‍🌫️A new dog may not have.

💢Imagine being placed somewhere where you don’t understand the language, don’t know the people, don’t know the routine and don’t know which noises matter.

🍥Then something somewhere in the house suddenly BANGS.😳

You don’t know it was the washing machine.

You just know something banged.

🍥A person reaches towards a door and suddenly there’s a loud CLICK and the entire wall appears to open.

You know it’s a door.

Does the dog?

🍥Something enormous suddenly roars into life and moves across the floor.

You know it’s a vacuum cleaner.

Your dog may simply see and hear a loud, unpredictable object coming towards them.

🍥A curtain suddenly moves.

🍥A reflection appears in a dark window.

🍥Someone walks across the room upstairs.

🍥The ice maker drops ice.

🍥The heating clicks on.

🍥A delivery driver approaches the house.

➡️None of these things are inherently frightening.

💯But familiarity is what makes them ordinary.

💯And familiarity takes time.

⚠️This is particularly important when we bring home rescue dogs, but it applies to any new dog. A puppy, an adolescent, a rehomed adult, an ex-breeding dog or a dog moving from a completely different environment may encounter things in your home that they have genuinely never experienced before.

So when your new dog freezes at the doorway…

👀Won’t walk across the kitchen…

👀Barks at a reflection…

👀Startles when the heating comes on…

👀Won’t go upstairs…

👀Watches the curtains suspiciously…

👀Or suddenly runs away when an appliance makes a noise…

❌Don’t immediately label them stubborn, difficult, dramatic or reactive.

Look at the environment from their perspective.

Ask:

“Could this simply be new?”

💁🏼Because the house you’ve lived in for years and barely notice anymore may represent hundreds of completely new experiences to your dog.

You already know which things are harmless.

✅They still have to learn.

✅Give them the time, space, choice and gentle exposure necessary to discover that all these strange sights, sounds, smells, surfaces and movements are simply part of their new world.

🙌What is completely NORMAL to us may be completely NEW to them. ❤️🐾
