The Happy Pets Family had a wonderful and busy break! Dr. Magee and Jeff spent their time in Spain and Portugal relaxing and recharging. Jacqui and her family headed to the mountains for some R&R. Jacqui also (so bravely) stepped up to try and handle keeping up with the phone and email over our break. Most importantly, Trucky had some much needed behind the scenes work—new wrap, new water pump and cameras, and some extra TLC! As always, we are so grateful for everyone’s support and patience while we were out. We treasure our down time and once we all recover from the jet lag are ready to be back and better than ever!

Kitten season is here… and this sweet face is Nova!

We recently visited Nova for her checkup, and we couldn’t resist sharing her with all of you. Kitten season is one of the busiest times of year for animal shelters and rescues, and right now many are overflowing with tiny lives looking for loving homes.

While we’re not accepting new clients as we mentioned in our post yesterday, if you’re already part of the Happy Pets family, any new puppy, kitten, dog, or cat you welcome into your home is always welcome as a new patient! Whether you’ve adopted a rescue, found a stray, or added a new furry family member, we’re happy to care for them alongside the rest of your crew.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, there’s never been a better time. And if you can’t adopt, consider fostering, volunteering, or donating to your local rescue. Every little bit helps during kitten season.

✨ Welcome to the Happy Pets family, Rufus! 🐾💙

Just look at this face! 😍 Today we had the pleasure of meeting sweet Rufus for his very first puppy visit, and we couldn’t be more excited to be part of his healthcare journey from the very beginning.

While we’re currently not accepting new clients, once you are a client of ours you are part of the Happy Pets family! We strongly encourage our existing clients to continue to grow their furry families! Whether you add a puppy, dog, kitten, or cat, we’re always happy to welcome your new family member as a patient.

We can’t wait to watch Rufus grow into a handsome adult! 💛

April is Heartworm Awareness Month ❤️🦟

Heartworm disease is a serious, and potentially fatal, condition. It’s spread by mosquitoes, which means if you live in areas like ours (those darker red zones on the map), your pets are at higher risk.
At a continuing education event a few years ago, we learned a startling statistic: around 100 pets per day were being diagnosed with heartworms in Hillsborough County alone. This disease is not rare. It’s happening right here in our community.

💉 Treatment for heartworms isn’t simple. It involves a series of injections of an arsenic-based medication deep into the muscle in the back, along with strict exercise restriction and months of recovery. It’s not only hard on pets, but emotional for owners too.

🐾 We’re also sharing the story of one very special patient, Phil, (Jacqui’s rescue pup extraordinaire) who has become the “face” of heartworm disease for us. While he successfully made it through treatment and is now living a happy, full life, he does have lasting damage to his heart and lungs from the infection. His story is a powerful reminder that even when pets survive heartworms, the effects can be lifelong.

✨ That’s why prevention is everything.

• Keep your pet on monthly heartworm prevention
• Test annually
• Don’t skip doses

In Florida and other high-risk areas, heartworm prevention isn’t optional. It’s essential.

Jeff and I were so lucky to spend the last week in the BEAUTIFUL Costa Rica. The biodiversity is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. We appreciate everyone’s patience while I was away and support of my love for vacation time 😂. We’re always grateful for Jacqui manning the truck and phones while we’re gone! Here’s a sampling of some of the most incredible wildlife we got to see!

FOSTER OR FUREVER HOME NEEDED!

Meet Puddin!
This sweet girl is currently being fostered by one of our amazing clients. We’re helping share her story because while she gets along great with the small dog in the home, she’s having a tough time with the large dog there and would do best in a different setup.
Here are some words from her foster:
• Friendly, loving, and a certified couch potato
• Crate trained & potty trained 🙌
• Would do best as an only dog or with one small dog.
• Afraid of large dogs
• Big love bug who can be a little jumpy so would do best in a home without small children.
• Loves toys (shows them off!) but doesn’t destroy them.

Puddin is sweet as pie (or pudding 😆) and just wants a calm home where she can relax, snuggle, and be someone’s best girl.

Holiday break photo dump: We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Although we sometimes take breaks from work, we never take breaks from each other! Dr. Magee an Jacqui started the break in St Augustine with our dogs/husbands and Dr. Magee’s family. We came home Christmas for some cuddles with the cats before heading to Miami to cheer on our favorite hockey team (and the football team we don’t really want to talk about right now 😂) were well rested now and looking forward to seeing everyone back on the road! Happy 2026!
