🦸 BE THEIR SUPERHERO: RABIES AWARENESS & PREVENTION 🐾

Rabies has been making headlines close to home and across the country, and we want our River Mill families to be informed—not alarmed.

📍 Close to home: A cat in the Gibsonton area recently tested positive for rabies, prompting a 60-day rabies alert for part of Hillsborough County. The cat had no known rabies vaccination.

Across the country: The CDC recently issued a Health Advisory following an increase in reported human exposures to rabid or potentially rabid animals. And in North Carolina, three baby goats from a mobile petting zoo tested positive for rabies, leading to an investigation of people who may have had contact with them. 🐐

The takeaway? Rabies prevention still matters.

🦸 Be their superhero:

✔️ Keep your pet’s rabies vaccination current
✔️ Avoid contact with wildlife and unfamiliar animals
✔️ Contact your veterinarian promptly after a possible exposure
✔️ If a person may have been exposed, contact a healthcare provider or local health department

A Parked Car Can Become Deadly in Minutes

Even on a warm day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes. Cracking the windows is not enough to keep your pet safe.

Protect your furry family members by:
• Leaving them at home if they can't come inside with you
• Planning pet-friendly stops when traveling
• Always providing fresh water before and after outings

Heat Can Happen in Minutes

Florida summers can be dangerous for our pets. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can develop quickly, especially during walks, playtime, or time spent outdoors.

Know the warning signs:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting
• Bright red gums

If your pet shows signs of overheating, move them to a cool area, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

A little prevention goes a long way—keep fresh water available, avoid the midday heat, and never leave your pet in a parked car.
