🐾 June is National Microchip Month – Is Your Pet Protected? 🐾

Every year, thousands of pets go missing, and sadly, many never make it back home. Even indoor pets can slip out an open door, escape during storms, or get lost unexpectedly.

Collars and ID tags are important, but collars can break, and tags can become damaged or unreadable. That’s why microchipping provides an extra layer of protection.

A microchip is a safe, simple, and effective form of permanent identification about the size of a grain of rice. It is placed just under your pet’s skin and contains information linked to a national pet recovery database. If your pet is found and scanned by a veterinary hospital, animal shelter, or animal control officer, your contact information can help reunite you with your furry family member.

Microchipping significantly increases the chance of bringing lost pets home safely.

✔ Safe and quick procedure
✔ Permanent identification
✔ Works for dogs and cats
✔ Gives peace of mind

This National Microchip Month, take an important step to protect your pet. If your dog or cat is not microchipped — or if your contact information needs updating — call River Mill Animal Hospital today. ❤️🐶🐱

Florida Heat Can Be Dangerous for Dogs

With summer temperatures climbing in Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, and New Tampa, it’s important to remember:

If you’re hot, your dog is hot too.

Even a quick walk in the Florida heat can lead to burned paws, overheating, or heat stroke.

Before walks, do the 10-second pavement test:
Place your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Summer Safety Tips:
• Walk early morning or late evening
• Bring fresh water and take breaks often
• Avoid hot asphalt whenever possible
• Stick to grass or shaded areas
• Never allow pets to drink from puddles, ponds, or unknown water sources

Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs:
• Excessive panting
• Bright red tongue or gums
• Thick saliva
• Vomiting
• Weakness or collapse

If you notice these signs, move your pet to a cool area and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Need safer ways to burn energy indoors? Try treat hunts, puzzle toys, or indoor obstacle courses on especially hot days.

At River Mill Animal Hospital, we’re here to help keep your pets safe, healthy, and active all summer long.

Vomiting or diarrhea in your dog?

It might seem like a simple stomach upset—but it can also be a sign of something more serious, like pancreatitis.

We see this more often than you’d think, especially when dogs get into fatty foods or table scraps.

⚠️ Watch for:
• Repeated vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Signs of abdominal pain

Pancreatitis can become serious quickly, and pets can dehydrate fast.

Early care makes all the difference.
At River Mill Animal Hospital, we proudly care for pets in Tampa, Wesley Chapel, and Zephyrhills and are here to help you get answers—and relief for your pet—quickly.

Anesthesia-Free Dentals: What Pet Owners Need to Know!!!

Your pet’s teeth may look clean… but are they healthy?
At River Mill Animal Hospital, we’re often asked about anesthesia-free dental cleanings. While these cleanings may remove visible tartar, they do not treat dental disease below the gumline — where infection, inflammation, discomfort, and damaged teeth are commonly found.

Because pets are awake during anesthesia-free procedures, they do not allow for:
❌ Thorough cleaning below the gumline
❌ Complete oral exams
❌ Safe treatment of painful or infected teeth
❌ Proper scaling and polishing of all tooth surfaces

Professional veterinary dental cleanings under anesthesia allow our team to:
✔ Perform a thorough oral exam
✔ Clean above and below the gumline
✔ Safely scale and polish the teeth
✔ Evaluate for signs of dental disease

We understand anesthesia can feel intimidating, which is why patient safety and monitoring are always top priorities at River Mill Animal Hospital.

If you’re looking for dog or cat dental cleanings in New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, or Zephyrhills, our team is here to help keep your pet healthy and comfortable ❤️

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home—and your pet’s environment too.

Keeping your pet’s space clean helps reduce odors, shedding, and bacteria while supporting their overall health.
Here are a few simple tips:

• Deodorize pet bedding with baking soda
• Remove pet hair using a damp rubber glove
• Wash toys, collars, and blankets regularly
• Groom pets outdoors to reduce shedding indoors
• Use a black light to find and clean hidden stains
• Clean food and water bowls weekly

Maintaining a clean environment helps prevent odors and supports your pet’s health year-round.

River Mill Animal Hospital proudly serves Tampa, Wesley Chapel, and Zephyrhills with compassionate, full-service veterinary care.
