🐱💉 Why does my kitten need multiple rounds of vaccines?

You may wonder why kittens need a series of vaccines instead of just one. The answer has to do with maternal antibodies—the protective antibodies kittens receive from their mother through her milk.

These antibodies help protect kittens during their first weeks of life, but they gradually decrease over time. While they’re present, they can also interfere with a vaccine’s ability to create a strong immune response.

Because we can’t know exactly when a kitten’s maternal antibodies will drop low enough for vaccination to work effectively, we give vaccines in a series of rounds. Each dose helps provide protection as that maternal immunity fades, increasing the chance that your kitten develops a strong immune response.

🐾 Think of it as building a bridge of protection from the immunity they received from mom to the immunity their own immune system develops.

Following your veterinarian’s recommended vaccine schedule is an important part of giving your kitten the healthiest start possible. ❤️

🐱 “But my cat never goes outside!” 😸

We hear this one a lot! Even indoor cats need their vaccines.

Rabies and FVRCP are core vaccines for cats and help protect against serious diseases.

And here’s something many cat parents don’t realize: you can accidentally bring viruses into your home on your shoes, clothing, or hands.

FVRCP protects against three viruses, and two of them — Feline Panleukopenia and Feline Calicivirus — are especially tough. They can survive outside of a cat’s body for a long time, so simply staying indoors doesn’t mean your cat has zero exposure risk.

We know it’s easy to think, “They’re inside, so they’re safe.” But keeping your cat’s vaccines up to date is one simple way to help protect them. ❤️🐾

Have questions about which vaccines your cat needs or when they’re due? We’re happy to help!

🐱 Cat parents, don’t forget about preventative care! 🐾

Even if your cat is indoors all the time, they still need regular vet care. Cats are really good at hiding when they don’t feel well, so keeping up with the basics can help catch problems early.

A few things to keep in mind:

💉 Vaccines
🦟 Heartworm prevention — yes, even for indoor cats!
🐜 Flea prevention
🦷 Dental care
🧪 Routine testing
🥣 Keeping them at a healthy weight

And as your cat gets older, their needs change, too.

Want to learn more? We put together a quick guide with some of the things you should know about preventative care for cats. 🐾
