🐾 EVERYONE SAY HELLO TO CHARLEE BEAR! 🐾

Meet Charlee Bear, a 7 month old Bernedoodle who will officially be starting training with me in just a few days! 💕

Welcome to the Cultured Canines of Tampa family!

But I actually got a little head start getting to know this girl.

While Charlee Bear’s family was out of town, she spent a few days staying with Your Puppy, My Pad Pet Sitting in Wesley Chapel, which gave me a pretty unique opportunity as her trainer.

I was able to meet Charlee Bear, interact with her, watch how she responded to me, and get a feel for some of those wonderful puppy behaviors her family has been telling me about. 😂

And for me as a trainer, that opportunity is incredibly valuable.

I got to spend time with Charlee Bear away from her home environment and without her family present. That gave me another piece of the puzzle before we even begin training.

I could observe how she interacts with someone new, how easily I can get her attention, what motivates her, how she responds to communication, and where some of our early training priorities may need to be.

And Miss Charlee Bear definitely gave me a few clues. 😂

🚪 Open door? Adventure awaits!

🙋♀️ People nearby? Must jump and lick them!

🦮 Leash attached? Let’s see who’s walking whom.

👂 Someone calling her? I’ll get back to you on that.

🍗 Food within reach? Apparently that’s now Charlee Bear’s food.

Her family would like help with running through open doors, jumping, pulling on leash, listening and responding when distracted, licking people, and yes... a little food stealing.

Our goal isn’t to take away that happy, goofy Bernedoodle personality.

We’re going to help Charlee Bear learn how to live a little more politely in the human world.

We’ll be working on communication, name response and engagement, leash foundations, four paws on the floor, door safety, impulse control, and helping her learn that paying attention to her humans can be pretty rewarding.

But Charlee Bear isn’t the only one who will be learning.

I train the humans, too. ❤️

A big part of our work will be helping Mom and the entire family understand how Charlee Bear learns, how to communicate with her more clearly, how to reinforce the behaviors they want to see more often, and how their everyday interactions can influence what she does.

We’ll work on consistency between family members, what to do when those puppy moments happen in real life, and how to continue building these skills long after I walk out the door.

Because I don’t want families to feel like their dog only listens when the trainer is standing there.

I want them to understand how to teach their own dog.

When humans learn, dogs thrive. 🐾

🏆 THE REAL HOUSE DOGS OF TAMPA BAY: And the Award for Most Obnoxious Door Greeter Goes To…

Could YOUR dog be this year's winner? 😂

The doorbell rings.

The star takes their position.

BARK! BARK! BARK!

There's a mad dash to the front door. You're trying to open it while simultaneously trying to keep your dog from launching themselves through it.

The door cracks open and the performance REALLY begins.

Jumping. Spinning. More barking. Racing around the room. Maybe even an unscripted mounting or hu***ng scene because all that excitement has tipped right over into overarousal. 😳

And there you are saying…

“Sorry! They're just REALLY excited!”

But here's something we don't always think about:

What's it like to be the guest?

They may love your dog. But they may also be secretly thinking…

Please don't jump on my clothes.

Is this dog going to knock me over?

I'm actually a little uncomfortable.

What am I supposed to do?

Can I just get through the door first?

And because they're your friend, neighbor, family member, or invited guest, they may never tell you how they really feel.

Your front door doesn't have to be the stage for this performance forever.

You’ve Googled it.

You’ve watched the videos.

You’ve tried the treats, the tips, and the advice from friends, family, Facebook groups, and maybe even a stranger who met your dog for three minutes and somehow had all the answers.

The jumping when someone walks through the door.

The barking that makes it impossible to have a conversation.

The pulling that makes walks feel like work.

The dog who gets completely wound up when the kids get excited.

Not just watching the dog.

INSIDE A DOG TRAINING SESSION 👀🐾
𝗔 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜’𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴

When I walk into your home for a training session, yes, I’m watching your dog.

But I’m watching 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆.

I notice when you repeat your dog’s name five times.

When you say, “Sit…sit…SIT.”

When your dog jumps and one person says “off,” another pushes them down, and someone else laughs and pets them.

I notice when you tighten the leash before your dog has even reacted.

When you say “NO!” but never tell your dog what you’d like them to do instead.

When your voice gets louder because your dog isn’t responding.

And how often everyone is trying to fix the problem 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Here’s what I’m thinking while I watch all of this:

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲, 𝘁𝗼𝗼.

And most of those habits make perfect sense.

You’re reacting in the moment. You’re frustrated. Maybe you’re embarrassed. You need the barking to stop. You need four paws back on the floor. You need your dog to listen 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

Or maybe you’ve simply been doing something the same way for so long that you don’t even realize it’s become a habit.

Until we start talking.

And somewhere in that conversation, after realizing what’s actually happening, you’re secretly thinking to yourself…

“O𝗵𝗵𝗵𝗵…w𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.” 😳

And now you have questions.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲.

Because another really important part of what I do is 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

Yes, your family may have developed some habits that are contributing to what’s happening with your dog.

That doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

It doesn’t mean you’ve done everything wrong.

And it certainly doesn’t mean I’m standing in your home keeping score.
