Our this week is on Crosley!! Crosley and his family hit the ground running in their training and are reaping the results!!

Crosley has a traumatic history with other dogs after being aggressively charged by an angry off-leash dog. Since then, he’s taken the position that the best defense is a good offense and likes to let other dogs know that they need to just KEEP WALKIN.

Thanks to Mom and Dad’s hard work, Crosley is learning that other dogs predict good things! You can see that (with the help of neighbor dog, Snickers), he’s learning to expect a treat when he sees another dog, and checks with Mom expectantly!!

What do dog trainers do on the weekends?

People ask me this on the regular! Do I like…train dogs…?

Training is ALWAYS occurring so technically, yes, Ariel, Tula, and Hank learn from every interaction we have.

But my weekend goals are the same as yours: recharge, spend time with my family, and decompress to prepare to give YOU my best during the week!

What recharges me? It’s the Trinity 🙏:

☕️ Coffee 📚 Books 📸 Photography

And of course, the occasional rescue transport-hoppy trails Stormy!! 🐇

Happy Zookeeper Day!! Here’s a little flashback of my work with primates!

I had the distinct privilege of getting to work with, train, know, and befriend several special individuals of critically endangered species. Daisy and Benito are Golden Lion Tamarins. These callitrichids were extinct in the wild until a breeding program started by the National Zoo established and reintroduced them back into their native South American rainforest home. Today, they continue to exist in their native home thanks to the conservation efforts of this amazing program!!

Happy 10-4 to zookeepers worldwide. There simply are not more dedicated, selfless, hardworking, and passionate individuals around. Proud to be amongst this rare crew of professionals!!

Happy !! Today’s tip is about understanding your dog’s body language!

Many people assume a wagging tail always = a happy and friendly dog. You can see clearly in this video how that is not always the case!!

When I look at an animal and try to understand how friendly it is, I always look at the whole body. No one body part is the key to the whole picture.

Consider a “sad smile.” People will smile to “put on a brave face” when, in reality, they don’t feel very happy. It’s usually very obvious to the other person they are interacting with that that is the case. Identifying a dog as friendly just because of a wagging tail be the same mistake as insisting a person is happy just because they are smiling, in spite of the tears running down their cheeks.

This was a very obvious example of an unfriendly dog with a wagging tail, but many dogs wag their tails without such obvious crankiness! All of the signs in the video are other things to consider when trying to assess a dog’s feelings.

Ariel has spent more than a year and a half waiting to be part of someone’s world. 🧜‍♀️💔

She was found on the side of the road in December 2024. Since then, she has been living in a dedicated foster home with professional trainers, but despite all the progress she has made, her forever family still hasn’t found her.

Ariel is approximately 3½ years old and is a sweet, affectionate girl who loves snuggling and playtime. She is fairly low-maintenance and already has so many of the skills needed to become a wonderful companion.

🐚 Crate trained
🐚 Leash trained
🐚 Spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped

Ariel has also worked incredibly hard to overcome trauma from her past. With help from a behaviorist, professional training, consistency, time and patience, she has made amazing progress. She even participated in a children’s training demonstration at an aquarium!

Her foster family has prepared her for this next chapter. Now she just needs someone willing to open their heart and finally make her part of their world. 💜
