I absolutely love getting hand tame updates on previous TWFA offspring. It takes a lot of dedication to raise a finch as tame, but it takes even more dedication to keep it that way over time. Here is a video of Fawny, a Fawn Penguin Zebra Finch female hatched last year (2014). She is still tame today thanks to the hard work of her new family. She was NOT raised from the brooder day 1 like many of my hand tames are, instead she was parent raised and given supplemental hand feedings. Chelsea At Twfa

I found this really awkwardly shaped oblong Society Finch egg recently. I hope it wasn't painful to lay but it looks pretty tall compared to the normal shape I always find!

Nancy Ingram, NFSS member & Strawberry Finch expert, has started a page that is a mecca of information, photos & videos. You can see her setup for live insects, compost (bugs & sprouts), as well as her nesting box creations. I am SO VERY excited to be getting my first pair from her & her gorgeous sun porch aviary. :D She deserves way more likes so give her page a visit!!

I breed strawberry finches. I have figured out a breeding trigger for them that is missing from most

Hanging out with Mus the White Backed Mousebird this past weekend at the Cascade Canary Breeders Association Annual Show - s/he is so gosh darn cuddly it makes even the most masculine man melt. :D Getting my Mousebird fix and some practice before my pair get here, can't you tell?

Thank you Chatter Lane Aviary for letting me snuggle your baby and Lori Wilkinson for this beautiful photo!!

I just shipped the second to last order of the 2015 season a few weeks ago! Phew!! This year I’m sad it’s pretty much over more so than relieved, since this is what I’ve decided to be the last with my current breeders as many of you already know. The hardest part about breeding besides saying goodbye to your offspring is when you have to decide to retire your pairs. They become your beloved pets and carry the biggest chunks of your heart. Some misguided few may think all breeders don’t care about anything but profit or that birds (esp tiny ones) are incapable of complex emotions. That’s just silly on both counts! What we do is give our offspring and breeders the best possible homes and most of the time breaking even just for the love of it.

Over the years there have been so many customers or visitors who ask to be the home that I choose to retire their favorite TWFA breeder pair (or bird). For some of those asking there have been ludicrous offers of money rather than subtle hints! :) So when I decided to retire these pairs I sent out a mass email to these people with a complete list of who wanted whom asking if they were still interested. To my surprise nearly everyone responded. By the time I made it through the flock there wasn’t a single pair leftover for me to put into a retirement aviary. That’s a first since I started years ago! But this has surely been my best flock thus far.

I had planned on getting the same species but it's hard to replace the last breeders!! I also learned from the NFSS that there are species in aviculture that are not bred nearly enough in this country. Without imports they are all we have and if not carried on we won't have them in years to come - this has already happened with a few species. So I decided to choose a couple of these, and a third greedy one all for myself. :)

So what did I pick? Use the photo to guess and leave yours in the comments section below!

To find out the species I’ve settled on, read the rest of my latest update on the new TWFA website: thewhitefinchaviary.com.

It's always fun having visitors, but especially so when there are hand tame babies to put on someone's shoulder. Here are photos of a recent visit from fellow aviary owner & dear friend Kelsey @ Chatter Lane Aviary.

I finally caught my female BH sitting tight. Here she is poking her head out to scare away anyone nearby. Babies will hopefully come soon!

We have our very first EVER nest of Gouldian eggs @ TWFA!! My BH pair has been playing a disappearing act on me these past couple days. I see one or the other but never both. Today I can clearly see my male poking his head out from inside the nest as you can watch in this video.

This nesting structure design was created by the incredibly talented Nancy Ingram from her "wallet" nest box design. I modified it a little and included 10 different nest options inside. Chelsea At Twfa

They are here!! And by "they" I mean my latest 2 hand raised babies. Phaeos again and ever so sweet. They remind me a LOT of Miles & Fleur. Fleur & Dope are still with us also, still tame and affectionate when they wanna be.
