The 4th of July can be one of the most stressful days of the year for dogs because of fireworks, crowds, and unfamiliar noises. Here are some helpful tips:
-Exercise early in the day
* Take your dog for a long walk or play session before fireworks begin.
* A tired dog is often calmer and less reactive.
-Keep them indoors
* Bring pets inside well before dark.
* Close windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce noise and flashes.
-Create a calm environment
*Turn on a TV, fan, white noise machine, or calming music to help mask fireworks.
*Set up a cozy “safe space” with their bed, blankets, and favorite toys.
-Provide distractions
* Offer a stuffed Kong, lick mat, chew, or puzzle toy during peak fireworks times.
* Licking and chewing can help reduce stress.
-Check identification
* Make sure your dog’s collar has current ID tags.
* Verify that their microchip information is up to date. Many pets go missing around the 4th of July.
-Be careful with doors and gates
* Remind guests not to leave doors open.
* Even dogs that have never run away may panic and bolt when startled.
-Talk to your veterinarian if needed
* If your dog has a history of severe anxiety, contact your vet BEFORE, not the day of. They may recommend medication or other strategies.
* Even social, well-behaved dogs can become overwhelmed by the noise and crowds.
If your dog seems anxious, stay calm and act normally. Your calm presence can help them feel safer.
For senior dogs, puppies, or dogs with a history of noise sensitivity, it’s especially important to plan ahead before the fireworks start. ❤️🐶🇺🇸
